I Follow Back Everyone Who Follows Me. On Steemit, Is This A Wise Thing?

On Twitter, it seems you're "capped" by not being allowed to follow an unlimited number of people, and can only follow approximately as many people as follow you.

I'm looking for an alternative to this crappy limitation. I want to follow a lot of smart scientists and thinkers, but I have to follow back a lot of spammers and porn girls(nothing wrong with those things, just not interesting to me) in order to follow the thinkers and geniuses I wish to follow. Why? This simply makes my network less intelligent than my own voluntary choices would make it, given that freedom.

Are there any similarly "good" reasons not to follow-back all followers on Steemit?

A relevent video to help one think about these ideas is Mark Newman's speech "What Networks Can Tell Us About The World":

I don't see any. From what I'm seeing there is no such restriction or accompanying obligation.
