The Basilisk - El Basilisco

It's a creature from European legends. Its name means “little king” and the Basilisk is said to be the king of serpents. These beast have the power to kill a person with a single glare of it viwe. A Basilisk is born from a serpent’s egg incubated by a cockerel, so the resulting creature would be half-bird and half-snake.

Es una criatura de leyendas europeas. Su nombre significa "pequeño rey" y se dice que el Basilisco es el rey de las serpientes. Esta bestia tiene el poder de matar a una persona con un solo resplandor de su mirada. Un Basilisco nace de un huevo de serpiente incubado por un gallo, por lo que la criatura resultante sería mitad pájaro y mitad serpiente.

They are one of the most feared and deadly creatures of the mythological world and are extremely hostile towards humans. Its venom is so toxic that it can kill a man from a meter’s distance. In one story, the venom of the Basilisk traveled up the spear of the warrior who stabbed the Basilisk and killed not only the rider but his horse as well!

Son una de las criaturas más temidas y mortales del mundo mitológico y son extremadamente hostiles hacia los humanos. Su veneno es tan tóxico que puede matar a un hombre desde una distancia de un metro. ¡En una historia, el veneno del Basilisco subió por la lanza del guerrero que apuñaló al Basilisco y mató no solo al jinete sino también a su caballo!

The Chimera – La Quimera

It’s a fire-breathing monster from Asia Minor. It looks like a Lion with the head of a Goat protruding from its back and a snake as its tail. The term Chimera has now been used to describe any mythical creature which has parts from various animals.

La quimera es un monstruo que escupe fuego de Asia Menor. Parece un León con la cabeza de una Cabra que sobresale de su espalda y una serpiente como cola. El término Quimera se ha usado ahora para describir cualquier criatura mítica que tenga partes de varios animales.

The sight of a Chimera was considered to be a bad omen. The hero Bellerophon was commanded to slay this beast by King Iobates. Bellerophon rode into battle on his winged horse Pegasus and drove a lead-tipped sword into the Chimera’s flame covered mouth choking it on the molten metal.

La visión de una quimera se consideraba un mal presagio. Al héroe Belerofonte se le ordenó que matara a esta bestia por el Rey Iobates. Belerofonte cabalgó hacia la batalla en su caballo alado Pegaso y clavó una espada con punta de plomo en la boca cubierta con llamas de la Quimera, que la atragantó con el metal fundido.

The Kraken – El Kraken

It’s a legendary sea monster of giant size. It is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. The Kraken is usually described as a giant squid or octopus-like creature but it has also been described as crab-like. There are various tales of the Kraken attacking and destroying ships. It is also capable of making giant whirlpools which could bring down ships. It is believed that the myth of the Kraken could have originated from giant squids which could grow up to 18 meters long and would be rarely seen by humans.

Es un monstruo marino legendario gigantesco. Se dice que habita en las costas de Noruega y Groenlandia. El Kraken generalmente se describe como un calamar gigante o una criatura similar al pulpo, pero también se ha descrito como un cangrejo. Hay varios cuentos del Kraken atacando y destruyendo barcos. También es capaz de hacer remolinos gigantes que podrían derribar barcos. Se cree que el mito del Kraken podría haberse originado a partir de calamares gigantes que podrían crecer hasta 18 metros de largo y que raramente serían vistos por humanos.

Cerberus

It’s a three-headed dog which guards the entrance to the underworld where the dead are allowed to enter but no one is allowed to leave. Apart from its three heads, the Cerberus has the tail of a serpent, a mane of snakes and the claws of a lion. The name Cerberus is derived from the Greek word “Kerberos” meaning “spotted”. His three heads were supposed to denote the past, present and the future. They were also said to denote birth, youth and old age. The most powerful weapon for Cerberus was his stare which could turn anyone into stone. He had razor sharp teeth and his bite was also poisonous.

Es un perro de tres cabezas que protege la entrada al inframundo donde se permite el ingreso de los muertos, pero a nadie se le permite irse. Además de sus tres cabezas, el Cerbero tiene la cola de una serpiente, una melena de serpientes y las garras de un león. El nombre Cerberus se deriva de la palabra griega "Kerberos" que significa "manchado". Se suponía que sus tres cabezas denotan el pasado, el presente y el futuro. También se decía que denotaban nacimiento, juventud y vejez. El arma más poderosa para Cerberus era su mirada que podía convertir a cualquiera en piedra. Tenía dientes afilados como navajas y su mordida también era venenosa.

The Hydra – La Hidra

It´s a water monster from Greek mythology. It is said that the Hydra had many heads and whenever a head was chopped off, two heads will grow back in its place. The hydra had a poisonous breath and its blood was also deadly poisonous. It is said that the hero Hercules killed the Hydra with sword and fire. He protected his nose from the poisonous gas using a cloth and after cutting off a head he cauterized the open wound with fire to stop it from regenerating.

Es un monstruo acuático de la mitología griega. Se dice que la Hidra tenía muchas cabezas y cada vez que se cortaba una cabeza, dos cabezas volverían a crecer en su lugar. La hidra tenía un aliento venenoso y su sangre también era mortalmente venenosa. Se dice que el héroe Hércules mató a la Hidra con espada y fuego. Protegió su nariz del gas venenoso con un paño y después de cortarle una cabeza cauterizó la herida abierta con fuego para evitar que se regenerara.

Dragons – Dragones

Dragons are legendary creatures which are present in the folklore of many cultures. They are depicted differently in each culture. In western cultures, they are usually depicted as winged four-legged reptiles which are capable of flying and breathing fire. In Eastern cultures, however, they are depicted as large four-legged serpents which have a very high level of intelligence. One could say that they are the most famous of all mythological monsters and have been depicted in various fantasy shows even now.

Los dragones son criaturas legendarias que están presentes en el folclore de muchas culturas. Se representan de manera diferente en cada cultura. En las culturas occidentales, por lo general se representan como reptiles alados de cuatro patas que son capaces de volar y respirar fuego. En las culturas orientales, sin embargo, se representan como grandes serpientes de cuatro patas que tienen un nivel muy alto de inteligencia. Se podría decir que son los monstruos mitológicos más famosos y que han sido representados en varios espectáculos de fantasía incluso ahora.

Typhon – Tifón

He was a monstrous serpentine giant and the most deadly creature in Greek mythology. Typhon was considered as the “Father of all monster”. It is said that when he stood upright, his head brushed against the stars. His lower body consisted of two coiled viper tails that were constantly hissing. It is said that instead of fingers, dragon heads erupted from his hands. His wings were so wide that they would blot out the sun and fire flashed from his eyes striking fear even among the Olympians.

Él era un monstruo serpentino gigantesco y la criatura más mortal de la mitología griega. Tifón fue considerado como el "Padre de todos los monstruos". Se dice que cuando se puso de pie, su cabeza rozó las estrellas. Su parte inferior del cuerpo consistía en dos colas de víbora en espiral que constantemente silbaban. Se dice que en lugar de dedos, las cabezas de dragón brotaron de sus manos. Sus alas eran tan anchas que borraban el sol y el fuego brilló en sus ojos, causando temor incluso entre los olímpicos.

He was the youngest son of Gaia and Tartarus. Typhon tried to overthrow Zeus but was later defeated by his thunderbolts and was locked in Tartarus. In some accounts, he was said to have been confined under Mount Etna where he was the cause of volcanic eruptions. He is said to be the father of Cerberus, Hydra, Chimera and even dangerous winds (typhoons).

Él era el hijo más joven de Gaia y Tartarus. Tifón intentó derrocar a Zeus, pero luego fue derrotado por sus rayos y fue encerrado en el Tártaro. En algunos casos, se dice que estuvo confinado al monte Etna, donde fue la causa de las erupciones volcánicas. Se dice que es el padre de Cerberus, Hydra, Chimera e incluso vientos peligrosos (tifones).
