Now I bring a film my mom told me about all of the sudden that turned out to be a really good, inspiring movie to see on a lazy afternoon.
Queen of Katwe (dir. Mira Nair) is an American biographical sports drama film, based on the book 'The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster' by Tim Crothers. It depicts the life of Phiona Mutesi (played by Madina Nalwanga), a Ugandan girl living in little area of Uganda's capital, Kampala, called Katwe. She learns to play chess and becomes a Woman Candidate Master after her victories at World Chess Olympiads and is branded as a hero in her hometown.
The thing that most surprised me about this film is that it was a Walt Disney production. Because the story doesn't shy away from being raw and rash in its reality at many key points and the acting -provided by a very talented cast with actors like David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o - is breathtaking.
The film fills you with deep inspiration to overcome the hardships in order to achieve success, just like any good sports movie does - so much that you don't even stop to reflect on the fact that the sport in question is chess, because the movie makes you feel moved even if you don't care for this sport.
So, I'll give this touching, real-life story:
