Well it's like with anything on internet posting and so on really, the main thing seems to be to have a real conversation and not just shitpost or spam.
Posting actual content that's really interesting obviously gets the highest vote counts. I'm still working it out, but I think there's clearly a threshold of upvotes before you'll get paid for a post though I think it also depends on curators who upvote you, still working it all out.
Check out the FAQ on the different types of currencies like steem power and so on and it should make things clearer.
