Measure the refractive index of petroleum

Assalamu'alaikum Wr.Wb.
Refractometer adalah alat untuk mengukur nilai refractive index (index bias) dari sample minyak bumi. Alat refractometer yang digunakan di laboratorium pengolahan dan pengujian migas Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe adalah J357 Automatic Refractometer imageyang dibeli dari Rudolph Research seharga Rp.283 juta rupiah(termasuk ongkir). Rudolph Research sendiri adalah perusahaan yang bergerak dibidang pemasok peralatan laboratorium yang berada di New Jersey, Amerika Serikat. Prinsip kerja alat refractometer dengan mengukur indeks bias yang didasarkan pada perbandingan antara cepat rambat cahaya di udara dengan cepat rambat cahaya di suatu medium. Indeks bias berfungsi untuk mengidentifikasi kemurnian zat. Nah disini kami menggunakan liquid Aquades, Ethanol, dan Kerosin. Saat pengukuran menggunakan komposisi dari liquid yang berbeda untuk dicampur. image Suhu pengukuran harus diatur pada 25°C. Suhu pengukuran sangat berpengaruh pada keakuratan hasil pengukuran. Untuk mencapai kestabilan dalam pengukuran, alat harus dikalibrasi dulu dengan plat glass standar.
Langkah kerja untuk mengukur nilai refractive index menggunakan refractometer :

  • Pastikan semua kabel peralatan terhubung
  • Nyalakan tombol power
  • Masukkan sample dari liquid yang telah dicampur
  • Tekan tombol measure untuk mencari nilai refractive index nya
  • Tunggu sampai nilai refractive index nya muncul
  • Catat hasil pengukuran nilai refractive index nya
    Ulangi beberapa kali dengan liquid yang sama tetapi dengan sample yang berbeda agar dapat average dan standard deviasinya.

    Refractometer is a tool to measure the refractive index of the petroleum sample. The refractometer used in the oil and gas processing and testing laboratory of Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe is J357 Automatic Refractometer purchased from Rudolph Research for Rp.283 million (including shipping). Rudolph Research itself is a company engaged in laboratory equipment supplier located in New Jersey, United States. The working principle of refractometer appliance by measuring the refractive index based on the comparison between the rapid propagation of light in the air with the fast ripple of light in a medium. The refractive index serves to identify the purity of the substance. Well here we use liquid Aquades, Ethanol, and Kerosin. When the measurement uses the composition of different liquids to be mixed. The measurement temperature shall be adjusted at 25 ° C(tropical season). Temperature measurement is very influential on the accuracy of the measurement results. To achieve stability in measurement, the tool must be calibrated first with a standard glass plate.
    Working step:
  • Make sure all equipment cables are connected
  • Turn on the power button
  • Put the sample from the liquid that has been mixed
  • Press the measure button to find its refractive index value
  • Wait until the refractive index appears
  • Record the measurement result
  • Repeat several times with the same liquid but with different samples in order to find average and standard deviation.
