Fernando Alonso will receive a 35-place grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix, after McLaren-Honda broke curfew to change his car’s engine.
The team discovered a hydraulic leak in the power unit system after Friday practice at Suzuka, and broke F1's curfew swapping components overnight.
Honda elected to perform a complete engine change on Alonso’s car, fitting his eighth internal combustion engine of the season, his 10th turbocharger, 10th MGU-H, eighth MGU-K, seventh battery, and sixth control electronics unit.
The grid penalty will send Alonso to the back of the grid for Honda’s home race, alongside fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who will take a 20-place penalty for changing his Renault engine ahead of the weekend.
