The Oscar-nominated actor and activist James Cromwell, best known for starring roles in Babe and The Green Mile, has been sentenced to a week-long stint in jail. He had refused to pay a fine in relation to a protest against a proposed power plant being developed in Wawayanda, New York.
Cromwell, who has also appeared in Six Feet Under, American Horror Story, The Young Pope and the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was one of six protesters who staged a sit-in at a Competitive Power Ventures power plant in November 2015. They were arrested on-site, and later claimed during their trial that their actions were justified as the plant would cause irreversible damage to the local environment, along with further accelerating climate change.
The protesters were ultimately found guilty of obstructing traffic, with a Wawayanda judge fining all six $250 plus a $125 surcharge. Cromwell, along with two of his fellow protesters, refused to pay the fine, and will now face a week in an Orange County, New York jail.
