According to this interview, the 31-year-old just plays for an hour a day and now earns around $2,000 per month, which is nearly double what he was making selling rice.
This is a feel-good story of a young man who was struggling to make ends meet while trying to take care of his 82-year old grandmother. He turned to the blockchain-based game AXIE INFINITY where players can earn tokens and then cash those tokens out into local currency.
This young man, according to the story, is one of many people in Southern Asia who have turned to blockchain gaming to make a career.
What is ‘Axie Infinity’?
Axie Infinity is a fight video game in which players acquire, breed, nurture, and battle "axies," which are monsters. Players may purchase, sell, and trade these animals (axies), which are digital NFTs. These NFT sales totaled around $42 million as of June 2021.
Over a million people have joined Axie in the previous year. Many of them did so with the intention of profiting from it. While the admission fee for this game is somewhat high, starting at roughly $500, there are several examples online of people making a life playing it, which is especially useful during times of lockdown.
The enormous number of users has also had the unintended consequence of adding to the token's price rise during the previous nine months.
The price of Axie has skyrocketed in recent months.
Axie Infinity's price has risen by 1,750 percent in just three months.
Even more remarkable, in just over 9 months, this token has gone from an all-time low of $0.12 to an all-time high of over $83.
