Contest No. 21 -- Read Any Good Books Lately?

Hey, everyone! It’s time for our next contest!

Today’s easy contest is super easy if you like to read. And I love to read. I hope you do too!

All you have to do to be eligible to win this one is leave a comment and tell us your favorite book. Add the author name too please! That and upvote this post.

Here’s my answer:

The Cider House Rules by John Irving

The Deadline

This contest will be open for 7 days. When this post pays out in 7 days, the contest closes.

The Prize

The winner will earn half (50%) of the SBD earned from this post!

As the "judge," I have the final say on who wins.

Rules To Play

Be sure to follow these two rules or your comment / entry won't count. Yes, there are only two! It's really simple!

  1. Hit Reply and tell us your favorite book and that book’s author.
  2. Upvote this post.

The more people who upvote, the more the payout will be. It's simple.

NOTE: Please don’t write anything along the lines of "upvote me!" or "follow me." If you do, you'll be disqualified. That contributes absolutely nothing and is just spammy, so don't do it. Please!

Winner Announcement

After 7 days when the contest ends, the winner will be either randomly chosen or I will choose a winner. I will announce the winner that day (or the next day in case I get busy or it's late in the day and I'm snoozing).

For this contest, I'll use an online random picker so everyone has the same odds of winning!

Spread the Word!

Let your Steemit friends and followers know about this contest so more can play! It's easy and hopefully will be fun.

And the more who play, the bigger the prize will be.

So, feel free to Resteem this post or link it to promotion groups. Thanks for playing!

Sort Order:

I don't really read fiction often so hopefully an educational book is okay. I liked "Predictive Analytics - the power to predict who will click, buy, lie, or die" by Eric Siegel a lot!

That sounds really interesting, sort of like Malcolm Gladwell's books.

I'm a Game of Thrones fan, my favorite book is obviously A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1 - Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I am actually rereading it right now while waiting for the Book 6 of the series.

Cool. Nice to like a book enough to reread it!

One of my favorite series...I actually stopped watching the TV series since book 6 isn't done. I am about ready to go hunt down Mr. Martin and be his typist to help him get this cranked out ...it's been 5 yrs already LOL.

haha! You should!

Shogun by James Clavell. I have a fascination with Japanese culture that when I first read this book I was awed that even though it is fiction it is still rich in history and culture.

Sounds like a good, historical book.

It tells of classes and hierarchy during the shogunate era. It talks of war strategies, loyalty, even describing the way they dress and lots of other things. I think I might read it again lol!

Mi libro favorito es: Los Miserables de Victor Hugo

Good one.

Darn I've read so many I don't know if I could pick one...... I think I'll have to go with The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's dark / gritty and minimalist just the way I like'em.

OMG that was the one I was gonna say!!! It's absolutely brilliant.

Damn... gonna have to pick another one now :P

That scene with the baby still gives me chills.

Oh yes. BBQ baby. The whole novel was haunting. I remember reading it with a feeling of dread in my stomach throughout. Such talent!

You have great taste in books :P

Exactly how I felt - I knew what was going to happen I could feel it coming. Likeb watching a slasher flick and you can see the killer but the protagonist can't. I had to put it down and walk away from it for like a week.

Lol, I know. It was very tense. I read it over a couple of days. It was part of one of my courses at the time. So glad it was there. Some of the other books I had to read were terrible :P

laters :D

This is a random winner so the same answer is fine!

Oh brill. Great idea to get people to share their fav books. Love it :D

I wouldn't call The Road my favorite but I certainly love it. Great choice!

I struggled - 1984 - the outsiders - apprenticeship of duddy kravits - Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction - a child called it - the long walk - God I could keep going - the mind parasites. I dread the idea of choosing a favorite film.

I love 1984 too! Dystopian/post-apocalyptic fiction is my favorite genre. I think it explores humanity in the most fascinating ways.

Sounds good. He's a well loved author.

Gosh this is hard Peggy - so many good books! The Into the wilderness series by Sara Donati springs to mind as very good reads :)

I haven't heard of those. Might have to check them out. And I agree, so many good books!!

One of the books a loved reading was legend by marie lu

Thanks for playing. I haven't heard of this book.

Its good book its part of a trilogy havent started reading the other 2 yet but looking forward to it

My favourite book is Wind In The Willows.

Cool book!

My favorite book is "smart money woman" by Arese.

Sounds like a winner!

Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. This book is fundamental for anyone wanting to expand their horizons and realize their true potential!

Sounds like a great book.

King Solomons mines by H. Rider Haggard

Thanks for playing!

How tough to pick a SINGLE favorite! After much deliberation, mine is:
The Signatures of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert

Oh, that was an amazing book! She is a superb writer.

Its definitely ORIGIN by Dan Brown.
Quite a book, anybody here has read it too?
It claims to answer mankind's most fundamental questions;

  • Where did we come from?
  • Where are we going?

I really like his books. His attention to detail is amazing. It is part of what pulls you in to which ever book you're reading.

Thanks for playing.

Seeing as @emwalker already picked my fav (The Road), I'm gonna go for

Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie

It's a magical-realist romp, mixing history with fiction and set in India as it transitions from colonialism to independence. It was so funny and heartwarming and fantastical. I loved it.

Perfect!

Books! One of my newly found interest! I'm into reading recently and this is the first book I've read after x number of years. I've been re-reading this book 2-3 times because it's just so helpful, and every time you read, you understand differently.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Dr. Gary Chapman

This book has inspired my Relationship Tips series too :)

I am going to have to add that to my list. At this rate my too read list is so long, I'm not sure if I'll get through it.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Yeahhh me too! Maybe set a Minimum, Target and Outreach goal?
Minimum is 1 book for 3 months. Target is 1 book for 2 months, and Outreach is 1 book for 1 month. Break it down into days and you'll achieve it before you know it :)

I have some books that I can't buy from local book shops... damn... the shipping fees for Amazon is even higher than the book itself =.=

Yeah they can be. My hubby bought me a Kindle a few years ago, so that has helped a lot. I still have a box of books I would find on sale for a couple of dollars and buy them, which I still haven't read LOL

Hahaha clear those box slowly but consistently. Being consistent is the key, baby steps are still steps. So 1 page a day is still progress.

That sounds like a good one. I'm glad you're back to reading. I read every day for enjoyment and sometimes to learn!

Thank youuuu @peggyhazelwood, I'm glad I'm back into reading too. Didn't know there's such an amazing unknown world to me. What genre are your favourites?

Favorite Book?? Wow that's actually a hard one. I have 3 from my childhood that come to mind that had an impact on my life. I think I am going to have to go with 'The Witch of Blackbird Pond' by Elizabeth George Speare

The other 2 in case you were wondering. A Wrinkle in Time and Island of the Blue Dolphins all great books for a young girl to read.

Those sound like really good favorites. I recently saw the new movie of A Wrinkle in Time.

That is on my list of things to do this weekend. I hope I get a chance to see it

I really love the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or, as some call it, the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson. The second book, The Girl Who Played with Fire, is probably my favorite of the three. I really love how deep and complex the characters are and the suspense/plot-twists are great!

I read those three books years ago. I liked the first one best but all were good. The third one (maybe or the second) had so many references to people eating sandwiches that I had to chuckle!

I love this series, too, that when I read the first book I went out and bough the last two books right away. Makes me want to read it again :D

1984 by George Orwell.
Classic Old school book. The premise is just so incredible and relatable in the most scary way. I love all “big brother” type movies too.

Double good book. You read. You love.

Great choice!

The post office - charles bukowski

Thanks for playing!

Thank you for the initiative! Curious about the outcome :)

It'll be a random winner so it's anyone's ballgame!

Mi libro favorito es La Biblia cuyo autor es Jehová Dios

Thanks.

Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima

Thanks for playing.

Mine would be a recipe book by Jo Whitton called Quirky Cooking : )
It's the most used, the most broken and the one covered in food spills : /

That's great!! It's nice to have a loyal cookbook that is well used.

I might need to get another one some day ; )

My favorite book is the code da vince by Dan Bronw...
Do not last five days to finish reading it spent hours my full day reading, I fall in love in an incredible way one of the best books that I could read.

Thanks for playing.

"S" by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. A crazy read!!!

Sounds good!

Bible
......God

Thanks for playing.

My favourite book is: How successful people think, change your thinking, change your life!

Authored by John. C. Maxwell

I love books like that.

I really love anything by the author Garth Nix, but if I had to pick a single favorite of his it'd be Shade's Children. He likes to do book series over standalone, but Shade's Children is standalone and where I feared it might suffer because he didn't get to extend it out over multiple books it's still just as good as anything he made into a series.

Oh nice! I have some favorite authors like that where I read everything they write.

The Girl With Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson

Good one. Violent but good.

My favourite book is miracle cure by Harlan Coben
PhotoGrid_1522198972901.jpg

"You see, focus can be a dangerous thing. Your view of the world narrows. You grow obsessed. Blinded. You see everything in terms of your obsession and nothing else. You cannot accept defeat. You cannot understand why everyone else does not share your passion. Don't get me wrong. Concentration and focus are good and necessary. But when they slide unchecked, they can distort your perspective. In the ultimate pursuit of knowledge, you can easily become ignorant." ~
~
~
This is the quote I liked from this book. I think this can happen with anything you are focusing on from knowledge, work, love, sex, hobbies, and it's so important to be able to focus to achieve and to change the world for the better, but it is also important not to be obsessive compulsive and have a narrow and one sided view and let your passions rule your life. I thought it was a great quote.
~
~
~
The book brought up some major problems the world has now and one of them is money and where it should be allocated.
This is my first time reading Harlan Coben and it won't be my last. I was a little bit apprehensive in reading this one as the author wrote a letter at the beginning of the book warning the reader to put it down or return it if they have not read any of his more recent work.(It was published in 1991) Well, that just piqued my interest and I needed to know what my opinion of it would be. I wasn't disappointed, it was an enjoyable read that grabbed my attention right away.
~
~
It was a fast-paced, quick and easy read with an interesting plot. I was able to guess who done it but it was still a shocking and suspenseful read as the climax was executed very well! Going to have to read one of his other titles very soon. ~

Sara and Michael are a celebrity couple..Sara a top reporter forNewsFlash and Michael a top basketball player for the New York Knicks. Their good friend, Dr Harvey Riker, is in charge of the clinic which was looking for a miracle cure to AIDS. But things are going wrong...the patients who were showing up as cured, were being murdered, one by one. The partner of Dr Riker, Dr Bruce Grey, has committed suicide. Get the gist?
WorldAidsDay

He is a an excellent writer. I haven't read this one yet.

You have to..
You would love it..

This is my kind of contest! My favorite book is the Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. I adore Hemingway's understated way of writing, but I'll always remember this book because of how blown away I felt by the end. He captured the beauty and banality of life all at the same time.

Thanks for playing! He's certainly a classic author.

Tough decision because there's just too many of them. Maybe for now, with me having kids, it'd be The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Because, right now I'm working to up my kids' imagination while it brings me fascination about fantasies too!

It's so fun to introduce your kids to good books. Mine read a lot now as adults.

Although my list is long, one of my favorite books is The Little Prince, by the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, because although I first read it a few years ago, I still find it incredible that from such a short novel you can get so many motivational teachings and phrases.

Yes, I read that one years ago. Very good.

It's difficult to pick one... A great recent book I read is a collection of short stories by John McGahern called "Creatures of the Earth: New and Selected Stories", John Sallinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" is another one I like. "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini also deserves a mention, but my favorite books are actually auto biographies, so I'm going to give it to Howard Mark's "Mr Nice" Check this out, it's an amazing read.

Oh, I read The Catcher in the Rye in school. Excellent book.

Ya, it's a great read 👍

'It' by Stephen King

It was the first Stephen King book I read, not long after my 16th birthday. From that moment on, I was hooked. I've read almost everything he has written, and own the entire collection.
Such a shame he hasn't been writing real horror these last couple of years... I'm still looking for a worthy substitute... :0)

He's a great writer! I enjoy his more recent books (not so much horror!) but he does horror so well, too.

The entire 'Earth's Children' series by Jean M. Auel.
When somebody told me about this prehistoric novel, I was like 'Naah, not my cup of tea...'
But then I started reading and it just swept me off my feet.

The last book, 'The Land of Painted Caves' was released 9 years after the previous one, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get back in the story, but it just sucked me in. Such a shame no more books will follow...

cool!!

Oh, yes! I love the Earth's Children series! :D I've read them all except the Land of Painted Caves... which apparently had mixed reviews. But I'll decide for myself soon enough when I can eventually get my hands on it. :)

Congratulations @peggyhazelwood!

All the light we cannot see - by Anthony Doerr ❤️

Oh yes, what a fabulous book!

Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind

Such a good one!! I loved reading that too.

I'm not particularly a fan of Paulo Coelho, however, one of his books that caught me and that I can never forget is "Veronika decides to die". It teaches you to appreciate life and to realize that every day is important and you have to live every day as if it were the last.

Sounds good.

My fave is LOVE'STENDER FURY 💔 by Jennifer Wilde

Thanks for playing!

I have too many favourite books! :D

But, there is one that holds a special place within me - Star Ascendant written by Louise Cooper.

I drank that book in when I was a kid (it's an adult book, I read lots of things as a kid.) and it gave me an escape from the real world. It eventually inspired me to write my own work, which I am doing now! :D

My favorite book is "The Little Prince" by Antoine de saint exupery :)

Great book.
