FINDING ROMANCE IN ARKANSAS

in newbieresteemday •  7 years ago  (edited)

Traveling for work for many years, I encountered some pretty strange names of cities, towns and counties. Let me introduce you to some of the more unusual ones I found in Arkansas and how they came by the name.

Looking for love in all the wrong places?

Maybe you can find it in ROMANCE, Arkansas. Seems Romance was named many years ago by a school teacher who thought the view from one of the bluffs was highly Romantic!

Well if that doesn't interest you, perhaps WEINER will!

It's not what you think. This town was originally named West Prairie, but the train depot was call Weiner depot after some guy from St. Louis who was a railroad official. Eventually, the town started shifting out towards the depot, so they just changed the name to Weiner!

Hummmm.....don't want that, try THREEWAY.

Who knows what was going on in this town when it was named. Must have been so bad they didn't record anything. They probably decided to just leave it to our imagination. Wine maybe?? Not in the Bible Belt surely!!!

There is always BALD KNOB to consider.

Legend claims that Hernando De Soto discovered, then referred to, the large rock outcropping that was seen there as a "bald knob" while exploring the Mississippi River Valley . So there you have it!

If none of the others interest you, there is GOOBERTOWN.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any kind of history for Goobertown. The only thing I found was pictures of the roadside sign. Also, it appears that if you blink while going through it, you miss it! Maybe it had something to do with peanuts. Who knows?

Though not as attractive sounding, TOAD SUCK is a possibility I guess.

Now this is an interesting one. From what I gathered, the local church ladies would always tell anyone who was looking for a particular person that "he is probably down at the tavern sucking up alcohol till he swells up like a toad". Thus the name Toad Suck eventually stuck.

FRIENDSHIP might be the only thing you are seeking.

You guessed it....this little town got it's name from the many friendships gained by the early settlers. Friendships all over the place.

I don't think BLUE BALL will appeal to you men so much. You might not want to go there!

I really can't find any information on how this town got named, but I can only imagine the frustration some poor guy was going through when he named it!

Ok, so if nothing in Arkansas is satisfying enough, there is always Intercouse....Intercourse, PA of course. Sounds like they might have a lot going on there.

Check out the map below: There's one in every state, but from what I have found, Arkansas has the most quirky sounding town names!
