News-Story: RELATIONSHIPS & SOCIAL MEDIA

The internet and social media in particular is such a wonderful and interesting place. You get information, share information and meet people. Hundreds of relationships are created on social media on a daily basis. A lot of these relationships are business relationships while others are emotional or intimate. Some are temporary or have a short life span while others last a long time irrespective of whether they are for business or not.

My focus today is on the emotional/intimate relationships. Most of these people don't have prior knowledge of each other outside the internet. They chat, share images, maybe voice notes and exchange numbers. A lot of these relationships also depend on the same medium to survive until the relationship is 'consummated' by meeting each other physically or face to face. A lot of people have met their soul mates online and eventually got married and still live happy lives. There are a lot of such stories. But not all have been so lucky. A lot have been scammed, duped, deceived and gotten hurt via the relationships enacted over the internet. Most of these tales of tragedy were clearly planned schemes but some were just unfortunate incidents and mishaps.

In our news story for today, a young man was a victim of unfortunate tragedy emanating from a relationship that started online. The young man had never met this lady before but after connecting several times over the phone and probably on social media, he decided to pay a visit. The girl was single but pregnant. Reports did not disclose if the young man was aware of her condition before embarking on the trip from Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Ebonyi State to see her. But the reports disclosed that he wanted to marry the girl and that, probably unknown to him, the girl seemed to have a lover or ex-boyfriend who found out about the visit and sent young men who attacked them on their way from the girls shop to her house at the night of his arrival. In the course of the attack the girl escaped while the young man was stabbed to death and left in a ditch.

It all boils down to being careful with intimate and non-intimate relationships created online and people being honest about who they really are when emotions or long term relationships are involved. Well, we really can't stop unfortunate incidents from happening but we can try to be careful.
