Alonso has prolonged his contract with McLaren

Fernando Alonso has prolonged his "long-term" contract with MacLaren and believes that switching to Renault engines will allow the team to win races again "soon."

Fernando Alonso's future in Formula 1 has been uncertain for a long time due to the many McLaren problems caused by Honda engines that lack performance and reliability.
The signing of a partnership with Renault in mid-September offered the first signs that the double world champion will extend its contract with McLaren, but the confirmation came only a month later on the occasion of the United States Grand Prix.

"It's fantastic to be able to continue the relationship with everyone from McLaren. The heart always told me to stay because I feel like home here, it's a fantastic team with a warmth and friendship I have not met anywhere else in Formula One, " he said.

Alonso is confident that the use of Renault engines will allow the team to return to the position of winning races and, ultimately, world titles.

"McLaren has the technical resources and financial strength to be able to quickly win world races and titles in Formula 1. Even though the last few years have not been easy, we have never forgotten how to win and I think we can get it again soon" , added Alonso.

In the press release announcing the new partnership, McLaren did not provide any information on the duration of Alonso's contract. The Spanish says the deal is long-term, but there's probably a clause that will allow him to go by the end of next year if McLaren does not get some performances. "We never discuss the contract clauses and we will not do it now, but it's a long-term contract and we'll see how things are going," he said.

I am really really surprised he renewed with MacLaren thought for sure he'd bail on them this year.

He didn't say for how long.
