South African Gang goes into Bitcoin

in news •  6 years ago  (edited)

A few days ago I read the headlines of a South African 13 year old boy was kidnapped and the gang that did it asked for 15 Bitcoin as ransom. At the time of writing this ransom would be around the $110,000 USD. A pretty techie move for a gangster these days.

Local police stated that on Sunday, May 20, three gang members pulled up in a car near to where the teenager, Kathlego Marite, was playing with two friends close to his home in the town of Witbank. Witnesses said the men dragged him into the vehicle, leaving their ransom note at the scene.

I can't avoid thinking in this scene from the movie Chappie, were the South African gang led by the artists known as Die Antwood, use the very best technology of the country, the police robot unit, to take a criminal side and rob a money truck. This is just a comment on how technology is shaping every aspect of human interactions. Even the criminal face of our society is getting more aware of crypto. Im not trying to make fun of a sad situation like a child kidnapping, but isn't it interesting how mainstream crypto is becoming?

Lets hope this have a good ending for the family.

Peace.

Im glad you love Bitcoin, but "great news" should not be the wisest words for this.
Thanks for reading...?

Yea that is pretty crazy...but if some criminals understand how crypto works...why not ask for that instead of cash or something that can be traced or marked more easily?

BTC is not completely private, like other cryptos...so perhaps these criminals are dumber than they (and we) think.

Yeah, btc is not that private, but crypto makes the criminal job a home-office situation, not having to show a face to pick the money up. Well, thats the perk that I can imagine as a pro in the situation for the criminal. Weird conversation haha.
