BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:20 P.M.) - The body of a missing Israeli pilot was recovered in the Sea of Galilee (var. Lake Tiberius) this week after a long search, the Ministry of Defense reported on Tuesday.
The body of Lt. Yakir Naveh was recovered from the Sea of Galilee after the search for his remains were restarted on October 12th by the Israeli military, the Haaretz publication reported.
Upon discovering the remains, the body was sent to a forensic laboratory to confirm its identity.
Once the identity was confirmed by the forensic laboratory, the family of the pilot was notified, the Ministry of Defense said.
Naveh went missing on May 6th, 1962 after his Fouga Magister plane crashed during a training mission near the Sea of Galilee.
The plane was reportedly flying too low over the water when the engine went out; this resulted in the aircraft crashing into the Sea of Galilee.
On May 6, 1962, Naveh was training a cadet on a Fouga Magister when their plane got too low over the water and the engine cut out. The nose of the plane hit the water, sending them into a fierce spin, wing over wing.
The body of the cadet, Oded Kouton, was discovered a year after the crash; however, Naveh's would remain missing until recently.
