Damascus, Syria (6:00 p.m.) - After more than 5 years of total closure, the Damascus-Homs highway will be available for public traffic starting tomorrow after concluding the reconstruction process.
The strategic, M5 dual carriageway was completely out of service since Islamist rebels took over most of the areas overlooking it, sniping at vehicles and passers-by, as well as launching assaults on Syrian Army checkpoints along the way.
Following rebel surrender and eventual evacuation to Syria's north, much of the road was severally damaged and needed extensive works of reconstruction.
The highly-functional highway links the Syrian capital to the central and northern provinces and is considered one of the most vital across Syria.
