Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki discussed settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at a joint press conference in Moscow on Friday.

“Given our special relations not only with Palestine but Israel as well, we want to help reach a solid agreement which would legally secure the legitimate interests of Israel in the security field,” said Lavrov, noting that the agreement should harm Palestine’s interests.

He added that best format to hold talks would include the quartet of the United Nations, European Union, US and Russia, together with the Arab League countries.

Al-Maliki on his part blamed on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing with the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, saying Netanyahu just “wants to make an impression that he is ready.”

Both diplomats denounced USA’s unilateral efforts as a peace broker.

Lavrov also warned against looking at the Middle East simply from the perspective of combating Iran

“If it happens, the Palestinian problem will simply sink in new and much more painful challenges to which this region will be subjected,” the Russian foreign minister concluded.
