BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:55 P.M.) - An official from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) told Al-Mayadeen TV this week that Israel had worked with the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) and rebel forces in southern Damascus to recover the bodies of three soldiers killed during the Battle of Sultan Yaqoub in 1982.
According to the PFLP-GC official Talal Naji, both the Islamic State and Free Syrian Army (FSA) attempted to locate the remains of Zacharia Baumel, Yahuda Katz, and Tzvi Feldman, who were believed to have been buried in the Yarmouk Camp's cemetery.
Naji did not specify how he obtained knowledge of this alleged attempt by Israel to recover the remains through the rebels and Islamic State.
The Battle of Sultan Yaqoub was fought on June 12, 1982 in Lebanon's Beqa'a Valley.
It was considered a strategic victory for the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) at the time because it halted the Israeli advance towards the Syrian border and took a disastrous turn for the IDF's 90th Division when their forces were cutoff by the SAA at their western flank; thus, leaving them encircled.
The Syrian military seized an M-48 Patton Tank and three IDF soldiers, who they would later march through Damascus.
The fate of the soldiers would never be known.
