Russia says their FSB and foreign intelligence foiled terror attacks during World Cup (video)

Head of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov said that Russian intelligence services in cooperation with their foreign colleagues suppressed terror attacks during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, speaking on in Moscow on Wednesday at the opening of an International Conference for heads of intelligence services, security services and law enforcement bodies.

“The Federal Security Service has taken all necessary measures to identify and prevent attempts to use unmanned aerial objects by terrorists during the preparation and holding of various mass political and sports events,” Bortnikov specified.

He also did not rule out possible future merger of terrorist groups ISIS and al-Qaeda since “the transition to a networked organizational model based on regional branches may push the leadership of ISIS to reunite with al-Qaeda.”

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev mentioned that the “opponents of the legitimate Syrian authorities regularly accuse them of using chemical weapons against civilians” while the facts of “the use of these substances by terrorist groups are widely ignored.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia “maintains a restrained attitude” towards “the concept of engaging violent extremism” promoted by some states since the authors of the concept are “essentially ready to acquit extremists and justify their withdrawal from criminal liability.”
