BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:10 P.M.) - Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, stated on Tuesday that some nations spent billions of dollars to arm the militants inside Syria.
In a statement at the 3rd United Nations Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Program of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects, Ja'afari said that the illicit trade in small and light weapons represents the deteriorating ethical reality of the relations in the world nowadays.
He added that the world, today, is witnessing the most dangerous phenomenon which is the direct transport of small and light weapons and their ammunition by certain states to the groups which are on the list of the Security Council as terrorist groups.
Ja'afari stressed that this dangerous phenomenon is not only related to the illicit trading in the small and light weapons, but also, in the direct transport of the certain states’ stocks.
He pointed out that some Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are still spending billions of dollars to buy weapons and transport them to the terrorist groups and there are some regional states, such as Turkey, which are supplying militants with all types of care, training, protection and weapons.
Ja'afari added that there are some Western states, such as the US, France and Britain, which have spent billions of dollars to provide all types of weapons and to train and finance terrorists who exist on the Syrian lands including the terrorists of Jabhat al-Nusra and Daesh (ISIS).
