BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:00 P.M.) - Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was formally invited this week to visit the Republic of Abkhazia, the Sputnik News Agency reported on Friday.
Citing Abkhazia's head of state Raul Khadjimba, the Sputnik News report said the latter is confident that Assad would be visiting the small republic in the near future.
"Yes, we have invited him and I am confident that this visit will take place," Khadjimba told Sputnik.
Earlier this year, the leader of Abkhazia visited Damascus and met with the Syrian President in an official capacity.
The Republic of Abkhazia declared its independence in 1994 after the end of the Abkhaz-Georgian War.
A referendum was the passed in 1999 to recognize the small republic that is located near Georgia.
