DAMASCUS, SYRIA (9:00 P.M.) - The United Nations' Disengagement Observer Force have returned to their positions in the Occupied Golan Heights for first time after leaving the area four years ago, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Thursday.
Speaking in a press conference in Moscow, Col. General Sergey Rudskoy, Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff, said the UNDOF has just conducted its first patrol.
"The UN's peacekeepers, assisted by Russian forces, have just initiated their first patrol in the Golan Height after a 6 years hiatus", he told reporters.
It is expected that Russian Military Police will be deployed in the area to 'avoid potential provocations against the UNDOF positions'.
According to the Russian News Agency TASS, the Russian forces will be deployed in 8 points along the disengagement line separating the Syrian territories and Occupied Golan Heights.
The UN has suspended its operations in Syrian and eventually withdrawn forces when Nusra militants kidnapped 45 peacekeepers in August 2014 (released on September 2014).
