BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:15 A.M.) - The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) scored a major advance in northeast Syria this week, capturing several areas that were under the control of the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization.
Backed by US and French airstrikes, the SDF troops managed to capture several towns along the Hasakah-Deir Ezzor axis, resulting in big losses for the Islamic State.
According to pro-SDF activists, their troops captured the towns of Al-Ismail, Al-Aqra, Bir Mazal, Bir Dahamad, Al-Jarjari, Al-Halluni, Al-Bujari, Abud al-Jadan, al-Khinzir, Bir Zuqum, Bir Umm Ghurba, Qarat al-Moutab, Umm al-Rus, Sabkhat al-Sahil and Kisham after a fierce battle with ISIS.
The newly captured areas have expanded the SDF's presence along the Iraqi border by 35km.
An SDF officer said that ISIS retreated from most towns and has begun fortifying and building trenches in the Hasakah desert.
The officer added that ISIS has plenty of artillery field guns and technical vehicles in the region and will likely continue their hit-and-run attacks against SDF in bid to slow them down
