DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:20 P.M.) - A US-backed Syrian group has managed to break through a key bastion for the Islamic State in eastern Syria.

Fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) stormed Hajin town located along the Euphrates river to the north of Al Bukamal city.

The assault was heavily supported by airstrikes conducted by the US coalition, which targeted positions and fortifications of ISIS inside Hajin.

The town has been for long used by the Islamic State as a launch-pad to initiate attacks against the Syrian forces as well as Kurdish militia.

The terror group' territories have significantly shrunk since the Syrian Army, backed by allies, restored the city of Deir Ezzor and nearby towns in November 2017.

SDF has earlier announced a joint military operation with the Iraqi forces, aiming at eradicating ISIS from the areas it controls along the Syria-Iraqi borders.
