There are a couple good reasons to check out the night sky this week

in news •  4 years ago  (edited)

The Leonid Meteor Shower peaks on November 17, and all 7 planets in our solar system can be seen this week.

First, the Leonid meteorite shower is expected to peak overnight between November 16 and November 17. Take a look around the Leo constellation during the week and you might see as many as 10-20 meteors per hour. The meteors that you'll see are debris that was left behind by the Tempel-Tuttle comet.

For more about this, see Starwatch: look out for the Leonid meteor shower this week and All you need to know: 2020’s Leonid meteor shower

The second reason for watching the sky this week is that every planet in the solar system can be seen this week. Viewing details can be found from November 2020 guide to the bright planets.

If you look east, Mars can be seen during early evening
Also in the east, Mercury and Venus can be seen about an hour before sunrise
In the south/south-west, Saturn and Jupiter can be seen around nightfall
In the south-east, Uranus can be viewed around nightfall
Not sure where it will be, so you'll need a star map to find Neptune.
Neptune and Uranus will appear so small that you'll probably need binoculars or a telescope to see them.
