Facebook has been stepping up its drive to remove content from its pages with the acquisition of Source3. This was reported by Source3 and Recode as the financial parameters of the transaction were not communicated, as well as other details about the deal.
Facebook has ambitions not only to host content, but also a platform to help it generate and distribute it. It is in this respect that Source3's technology is expected to help protect the author's content. Last year, Facebook attracted the creator of CollegeHumor Ricky Van Wine. Along with this, contracts were signed with BuzzFeed and Vox to use the content they created on the social networking pages.
The technology developed by Source3 helps the company's customers learn about the ways in which the misuse of their content affects their products and how they can better protect it. The Source3 team is expected to join the Facebook office in New York, and the technology of the company is integrated into the Rights Manager social networking platform.
Rights Manager is a Facebook feature that works similar to Content ID used by Google on YouTube. It allows content makers to put their own "footprint" on their videos, which prevents them from re-uploading to the platform.
