In a “Reality Check” segment on the network’s New Day morning show Wednesday, CNN’s John Avlon talked about “Trump derangement syndrome,” which he described as a “political diagnosis” of people who “simply can’t accept the fact that he lost the election.”
Avlon said “patient zero” is the president, who continues to send messages via Twitter insisting falsely that he won the election, and claiming without evidence that the vote was the result of voter fraud—all as the Electoral College voted to certify Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
Avlon said “this is contagious, folks” and aired a clip from Fox Business Monday, where Maria Bartiromo told viewers “an intel source telling me that President Trump did, in fact, win the election.”
Avlon noted that as the 538 members of the Electoral College met to cast their votes, President Trump’s supporters went on cable news to insist there were “alternate” electors who would, in the end, certify the president as the winner. Avlon described these people as “cosplaying their own Electoral College ceremonies” as “sycophants” like White House senior advisor Stephen Miller went on television claiming the alternate Electoral College would “right the wrong of this fraudulent election and certify Donald Trump as the winner.” Or, as Avlon put it, Miller went on Fox News “to lie fast and loud.”
Avlon said Americans can disagree on all sorts of issues, but “Democracy depends on the ability to reason together from a common set of facts...let’s not disagree about whether the sky is blue or Joe Biden won the election.”
