Tips to help you deal with hayfever

Hello all! So as a sufferer of hay fever myself, I wanted to put together a list of tips and tricks to help you cope during the summer months. Some of these tips may not just apply to hay fever, but to other allergies as well. I myself suffer from many, including cat and animal hair allergies. Unfortunately, my boyfriend owns two cats and of-course, whenever I spend time at his house, I end up becoming a snotty, sniffling mess... and it's not in the slightest bit attractive.

  1. My number one rule is to ALWAYS carry tissues on me. There's nothing worse than desperately needing to blow your nose and there not being a tissue in sight... or having to resort to toilet paper!

  1. Take anti-histamines. Although this may seem like an obvious one, I wanted to include it on the list. I find that anti-histamines usually work to a certain extent. They do seem to help my symptoms, however they don't make them go away completely. If the ones you get at your local drug store aren't strong enough, go and seek medical advice from a doctor. They can prescribe you with some stronger and more effective drugs.

  1. Shower when you return home. If you've spent the day out and about, the chances are that invisible pollen will have gotten stuck to your clothing and hair. You're effectively bringing the pollen into your own home which is why you'll continue to experience the symptoms. Showering and washing your hair and clothes can help with this.

  1. Keep your car windows closed and use air conditioning instead. This will stop pollen from entering the car and accumulating exactly where you don't want it to. The same can be said for windows in your house. Keep your house cool by using an electric fan.

  1. Apply Vaseline to your outer nostrils. This will prevent the pollen from going up your nose; instead the pollen will stick to the Vaseline. Lip balm or any kind of balm would work as an alternative to this.
