Joe Biden is the next President of the United States.
This is the only certainty we can have at the end of this week following the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The results were close in many swing states. Whether in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, or Nevada, Joe Biden won by only a few thousand votes.
On a national level, Joe Biden won the popular vote by a wider margin, finishing with more than 75 million votes. Never before had a president of the United States been elected with so many votes. The previous record was set by Barack Obama with 69 million votes.
The Americans had understood what was at stake in this historic election
This shows you how much Americans understood the importance of this presidential election of 2020. The president who was to be elected would have the heavy burden of launching the United States into a decade that promises to be extremely uncertain.
The emergence of China, which wants to become the world’s leading power by 2030, is a cause for concern for the United States. The American model is built on the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency. If China succeeds in taking the place of the United States, this monopoly of the U.S. dollar could be a distant memory.

The American model of society would not survive it.
To face China in the years to come, the United States cannot be as divided as it has been for the last 4 years. Unfortunately, Donald Trump’s presidency has only reinforced the already deep divisions of the world’s leading power.
If Joe Biden is indeed the new president of the United States, he should not forget that more than 70.8 million Americans voted for Donald Trump. That’s huge considering Donald Trump’s divisive personality.
This means that even after the fall of Donald Trump, the ideas of Trumpism will survive.
Trumpism will survive Donald Trump’s defeat
These ideas supported by Donald Trump for the past 4 years will continue to play a major role in the United States in the years to come. Joe Biden will not be able to disregard them if he really wants to reconcile these two Americas which appear more divided than ever.
The fact that half of the Americans voted for Donald Trump allows us to draw some very interesting lessons about the current state of America.
First of all, many Americans are afraid of the socialist ideas that Bernie Sanders promotes. Joe Biden was inspired by many of Bernie Sanders’ ideas, and that’s something Donald Trump supporters don’t like.
They don’t want to be seen as bad people, but they don’t want to pay for others. The strengthening of Obamacare is therefore a divisive issue with this electorate, which initially wanted only one thing: that Donald Trump put an end to it.
Joe Biden will have to be extremely cautious in this area.
Anything that reduces their purchasing power is a sensitive issue. The Americans who voted for Donald Trump are making the economy their number one priority. They realize that Donald Trump was more of a “populist” than a true “conservative”, but they had enjoyed seeing the American economy post record results until the very beginning of 2020.
Joe Biden will have to make it clear that more equality is not incompatible with more prosperity
Many of the people who voted for Donald Trump explained that they would rather vote for this disrespectful character than let socialism take over the United States.
This shows you how much work lies ahead for Joe Bien and Kamala Harris to make it clear that the reforms they advocate to reduce inequality will not transform the United States into a socialist country.
These voters of Donald Trump may not like Donald Trump’s tweets, but they don’t want to hear about tax hikes. They liked Donald Trump’s aggressive tax-cutting policies and the many deregulations that he introduced during his four years at the helm of the United States.
Joe Biden will have a heavy job to make people understand that an increase in corporate taxes from 21% to 28% is a necessity to repair the excessive inequalities produced by Donald Trump’s policy. Similarly, everyone is well aware that people earning more than $400K per year in the United States must contribute more.
A small tax increase for high-income earners will not mean much to them, while it will support programs to help the poorest people living in increasingly difficult conditions in the United States.
Joe Biden’s reforms will aim to make America better in the long run
All Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ job will be to be educational enough to make people understand that their reforms are about making America a better place for everyone.
Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” was primarily marketing. In reality, Donald Trump has mostly divided the United States. The economic results were achieved at the expense of the interest of the greatest number.
Voters who chose Donald Trump also continue to express concerns about immigration. They are afraid of being demoted. They see that American society is changing and seem reluctant to accept it.
Yet it is necessary. The United States needs to change in every way. Global warming is already a reality. Joe Bien is going to bring the United States back into the Paris climate agreements.
And that’s good for the long-term future of the United States.
Some of Trump’s supporters find it hard to understand that they have to evolve
Some will be penalized in the short term, but they will have to transform their businesses to take advantage of the new opportunities that this will bring. The laws that Donald Trump passed to allow mining and drilling in Utah’s natural areas, for example, are not good for the long-term future of the United States.
It is not by damaging the environment in the United States for the sake of ever-greater short-term profits that the United States will be able to meet the challenges that await it in the decades to come.
This America of Donald Trump knows this deep down, but Joe Biden will have to make it even better understood.
All these supporters of Donald Trump can succeed in thriving in an America that is more concerned about its future. This is not incompatible.
America is still deeply racist
At the societal level, the last few months have also shown an incredible rise in racism in the United States. Donald Trump has freed the speech of the White Supremacists, for example.
Again, this is a bad thing for the United States. The United States cannot remain a prosperous nation if the problem of racism against blacks is not solved. See Mike Pence, the vice-president of the United States in the Trump administration, repeatedly refusing to utter these three words was disturbing: “Black Lives Matter”.
Mike Pence preferred to say each time: “All Lives Matter”.
Of course all lives matter. But the Black Lives Matter movement seeks above all to raise awareness that the current problem in the United States is that the lives of black people are not considered in the same way at all levels.
The police blunders that are multiplying are mostly directed at blacks. The American banking system is racist towards blacks. Examples are legion.
The fact that half of Americans still voted for Donald Trump shows us two things in this area. First of all, many of these Americans put the economy before societal issues in their concerns.
Second, some of the Americans are simply racist. This is a reality that needs to be talked about. To solve a problem, you have to understand it first. That means really talking about it, not doing what Mike Pence, for example, did.
So Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will have a lot of work to do in this area. Four years of presidency won’t be enough, of course. However, we need to get the United States back on track in this area. And now is the time to start.
Extraordinary challenges await Joe Biden and Kamala Harris
The American presidential election of 2020 has just come to an end. Joe Biden is the new President of the United States. The Democrats managed to get rid of Donald Trump. However, any triumphalism will have to be avoided.
The hoped-for blue wave did not take place. Almost half of the Americans still voted for Donald Trump. This means that the ideas of Trumpism will continue to carry weight in the years to come.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will have to keep this in mind. The hardest part begins for this duo who will have to work to reconcile these two Americas. As Barack Obama said in his congratulatory statement to Joe Biden, the challenges ahead are incredibly difficult:
“A raging pandemic, an unequal economy and justice, a democracy at risk, and a climate in peril.”
It is by working to address these issues that the United States will be able to come together again, and this is a sine qua non for the country to be able to fight its great adversary of the next decade: China.
Joe Biden’s presidency promises to be crucial for the future of the United States.
