3D-Printed Gun Advocate Cody Wilson Back in U.S., Posts Bond

DarkWallet developer and 3D-printed gun proponent Cody Wilson, who was arrested over the weekend in Taiwan and subsequently returned to the U.S., has been released on bond, local media outlets have reported.

The arrest of Wilson was covered on CCN in an earlier article where he was reported to have allegedly sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl he met on a “sugar daddy” website. According to a police affidavit filed in Austin,TX, Wilson had paid the minor $500 after having sex with her in a hotel. Hence the initiation of processes for his subsequent arrest.

As a 3D-printing expert, Wilson is the owner of Defense Distributed, an Austin-based company that is focused on the development of digital schematics of firearms in CAD files that can be downloaded and used in 3D-printing and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). This procedure is popularly suspected to eventually aid the production of untraceable weapons that could land in the hands of criminals, which is a reason why 19 states and the District of Columbia had sued Donald Trump’s administration against its agreement with the company in allowing the dissemination of such gun designs.

Despite the existing court injunction against distributing these files for free, Wilson’s company had gone ahead in the selling of gun blueprints, citing a loophole in the court ruling. While this controversy continues and the suit is still pending, the latest allegation on Wilson gives his attorneys some extra work to do.

“We are glad that Cody is back in Texas again where we can work with him on his case. That’s our focus right now,” Wilson’s attorney, Samy Khalil, said in a statement Sunday night.

Even though Taiwan does not have any know extradition treaty with the U.S,. the arrest and deportation of Wilson in the first place involved the cooperation of the local police with the U.S. authorities. Having been in custody back home, he could therefore be released on bond, as mentioned above.
