TIL: Cows are Fed Skittles

in news •  8 years ago

Yes, you read the title correctly. A truck spilled skittles all over the road that were intended to be given to cows. If you had not been a fan of free range beef, you may be now.

So @aprilangel has been on this whole30 diet, there has been lot of focus on food lately. I have done my best to continue my old habits of eating crap but am still losing weight from eating out less and my meals at home being quality whole30 approved. We have been a part of a CSA for some time so our meat or at least some of it is local and not factory.

For the last several years I have been attempting to be conscious about my food. Easier said than done sometimes given how our society is designed and the availability of poor food choices. I try not to consider myself a victim though, and take responsibility for my food choices.

I was listening to a Joe Rogan podcast and found out mad cow disease happens when cows ingest cow meat. It is linked to prions that are in the animals brain, it is the reason why eating monkey brains is not good for you. Seems to be a natural deterrent for cannibalism.

At this point my list for not eating factory meat is pretty long, but now lets add in that they are eating skittles. One could not find a more unnatural diet for cows than skittles but yet here we are. The below is from Dodge County Sheriff's Office facebook page involving some skittles on the road.

There is no way eating skittles is good for cows, not sure what the nutritional value is here. These farmers are just adding weight to the animals so they can sell them for more. Some of the comments on their post are acting like this process is completely normal and fine for the cows. That must be why they are pumped full of so many antibiotics.

From research I do know that the amount of land for all cows to be free range does not exist so some major changes would have to happen. Luckily there is some impressive research being done in meat substitutes that are indistinguishable from the real thing. Hopefully these products roll out soon so they can stop feeding cows defective candy.

And what do you think they are going to feed meat substitute?
A healthy, diverse solution of man made chemicals?

From what I recall they were using genetically modified bacteria to create protein compounds. So yes, chemicals...

A few years back, I was given a tour of a big chicken ranch and noticed off in the distance very colorful hills, ~20 ft high. Upon inquiring what they were, I was told it was old cereal that they use to feed the chickens. Not even the healthy cereal, but rather fruit loops, captain crunch and such.

It only took a short amount of time after that before I started sourcing my meat from a local butcher who lists the farms and feeds of all the animals sold.

That is crazy, my stomach turns just thinking about it.

Kind of makes you think about "you are what you eat." For a long time I worried about what I ate. Now I'm old and don't care anymore...I'm going to die and it won't matter (monkey brains and cannibalism are still OUT). My advice- enjoy what you can while you can...you're going to wind up dead anyway! Good post...upvoted as always!

Quality over quantity @richq11, yes we will all die. I would like to be able to wipe my own ass until the end though.

You just want to take the fun out of everything lol!

I almost wrote a post about this the other day. I was horrified and cracking up at the same time.

Yea, it's alarming

Government cheese and now Government skittles. What will they think of next? :P

Taste the bovine.
