Disney Ditching Netflix Keeps Piracy Relevant

in news •  7 years ago

From TorrentFreak

Disney announced that it will end its US distribution deal with Netflix in 2019. This means that many titles won't be available on the popular streaming service but through a new Disney-branded platform instead. While the media giant expects to profit from the strategy, more fragmentation is not ideal for the public. In a way, one can argue that it keeps piracy relevant.

There is little doubt that, in the United States, Netflix has become the standard for watching movies on the Internet.

The subscription service is responsible for a third of all Internet traffic during peak hours, dwarfing that of online piracy and other legal video platforms.

It’s safe to assume that Netflix-type streaming services are among the best and most convenient alternative to piracy at this point. There is a problem though. The whole appeal of the streaming model becomes diluted when there are too many ‘Netflixes.’

Yesterday, Disney announced that it will end its US partnership with Netflix in 2019. The company is working on its own Disney-branded movie streaming platforms, where titles such as Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 will end up in the future, in the United States at least.

Disney titles are among the most-watched content on Netflix, and the company’s stock took a hit when the news came out. In a statement late yesterday, Disney CEO Bob noted that the company has a good relationship with Netflix but the companies will part ways at the end of next year.

At the moment no decision has been made on what happens to Lucasfilm and Marvel films, but these could find a new home as well. Marvel TV shows such as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage will reportedly stay at Netflix

Yeah - Disney has been notorious for making very poor choices- Wherever they can get a buck - but it usually ends up biting them in the ass. They lost me the minute they gave up 2D animation. I like 3D and it is what I went to school for but that is only because Disney/industry deemed 2D animation obsolete. Which is funny because to make a nice cash cow they milk those old 2d classics "Opening up the Disney Volt" every 5 years to let us know they haven't made an original hit in ages and still need to milk those stories. All they do now is live action or 3d bs. There channel is a fracking mess... and they pump out the worst type of celebrities... like Jake Paul/Miley Cyrus and general cancer.

I am not bitter...

If Disney left Netflix I really would not give one toot - might even improve things.

I didn't know Disney announced that thanks for the information.
