Youtube steps up its game ... in the worst way possible

in news •  7 years ago

Youtube is now putting videos into a "limited state" if they are deemed controversial enough to be considered objectionable, but not hateful, pornographic or violent enough to be banned altogether.

It's has recently announced that besides the big demonetizacion that's been happening recently, new messures will be taken to discourage the publication of what they deem "controvesial and inappropiate", new videos which are considered harmful, controversial or violent, not only will be unabled to be monetized but embeded option will be disabled, you won't be able to share those vidos on other websites.

When you take in consideration how all this started, and how advertirsers and their complaints took a big part in the "adpocalypse", you start thinking, "who is youtube for?". Youtube used to be a platform where anybody could upload their content and share their point of view, once monetization became an option, many people saw it as an opportunity to make some money creating quality content to entertain, a place where jornalists and bloggers could share news and opinions without any censorship that is common in mainstream media, but now it seems that Youtube like the other media is just beeing run by the advertisers, and if they consider something "not advertiser friendly" is going to send to obscurity .

Advertisers have the right to choose where their products or services are advertised, but the content that can not be advertise because is controversial, should not be penalized by not beeing able to be shared, this will just discourage content creators who genuinely want to share news and opinions regarless the monetization, now their content will not be seen by as many people as it deserves.

Is yet to be seen how the youtube algorithm will treat all those videos, perhaps those videos in "limited state" won't be featured anywhere on the platform and will be send to the last page result when you search for them, or maybe they might not show up at all, we will have to wait to see.

P.S. Dtube is the future.

makes me sick that youtube is heading this way, a bunch of quality content there is getting demonatized and the place is getting full of 12 year olds. let's hope Dtube will take over.

I know, all the good content will be gone, all the videos that matter and can actually inform and give perspective will dissapear, it's sad but it will become low quality advertiser friendly content.

Some of it is really cool!

I miss the good ole days of youtube where all you would see is videos from regular people going viral, now its just tv stuff everywhere. :\

I do too, now a days it's just click bait, big sponsored informatial like videos, and low quality cringy videos.

Dtube hopefully will be the next. I wish D tube had better search options.

Dtube has the potential, but it's a relatively new platform and it needs time to improve, hopefully people in charge take the time to improve it so more people can join and bring good content.
