The whole point of the story is how the Muslim culture plays into the events that occurred so I would say it is salient to mention from the get go that both she and her parents are Muslim.

Blaming the actions taken by this girl on her family's religion is just such a big generalization. I have met many muslim families here in Jordan who don't share this way of thinking and I am 100% sure you could find many girls scared of what their parents would say if they found out they are pregnant regardless of what religion does the family adhere to.
