“It became necessary to destroy the town to save it" was vile ethics during the Vietnam War.It should not be applied to public health policy today.

Justifying horrible actions for some supposed greater good isn't just a slippery slope, it is the result of having already slid down to the bottom of the slope. And that's even if you can point to the actions and at least definitively show how they helped. In this case, even that isn't true.
Fauci's main claim here is that we had to take extraordinary measures in the form of shutting down businesses, restricting people to their homes, keeping kids out of school, among many other restrictions in order to prevent a catastrophic spread of COVID. Unfortunately, that isn't what happened. Two weeks to "flatten the curve" became an indefinite lockdown which caused far more harm than good. This can be shown by comparing states that enforced these strict lockdowns vs. those that didn't. There wasn't really any statistical difference in terms of the spread of COVID. Additionally, even the vaccines didn't significantly reduce the spread of COVID (though arguably they reduced the symptoms) and it is not unreasonable to be concerned about potential long term negative effects of the vaccine.
No matter how you look at it, Fauci's policies were a disaster for the country. He will no doubt try to spin it otherwise for the rest of his life but there is no evidence that the actions he recommended had a significant benefit, much less a significant enough benefit to outweigh the negative consequences of those actions. The result was an economic and social disaster that will take many years to overcome. I like to think that this was simply bad judgement but I at least understand the conspiracy theories that say otherwise. It just doesn't seem like this level of incompetence could possibly exist. Let's hope that in the long run, it isn't even worse than we think.
