The fact of the matter is that private property is taken care of far better than public property in most cases. Private property rights can also help in instances where a corporation owns land and is doing something stupid to cut costs (say dumping toxic chemicals into the local river instead of disposing of them properly)...when the government isn't protecting those corporations anyway.
