(CNN)An Israeli flight attendant has slipped into a coma after contracting measles, according to health officials.
The 43-year-old woman has encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, a well-known and potentially deadly complication of the virus. She was otherwise healthy before getting measles.
"She's been in a deep coma for 10 days, and we're now just hoping for the best," said Dr. Itamar Grotto, associate director general of Israel's Ministry of Health.
The flight attendant, who works for El Al, the Israeli national airline, might have contracted the virus in New York, in Israel or on a flight between the two, Grotto said. Health authorities do not believed that she spread the virus to anyone on the flights.

She's unable to breathe on her own and on a respirator in the intensive care unit at Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, near Tel Aviv.
She developed a fever on March 31 and entered the hospital that same day.
Ongoing measles outbreaks in the United States and Israel started with parents who've chosen not to vaccinate their children, according to health authorities. Authorities believe that the flight attendant was vaccinated as a child, but the vaccine isn't perfect, and in her case, it didn't work.
"I knew this was going to happen sooner or later," said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University and an adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on vaccines. "We have the reintroduction of a serious viral infection with a population that's withholding the vaccine from their children, and now it's spreading beyond that population."
This is why herd immunity is so important. If you don't get vaccinated or if you don't get your kids vaccinated, even if nothing happens to you, you could end up effectively carrying around a biological WMD and unknowingly cause untold harm at random to the people around you.
Apparently Dan Larimer doesn't understand the concept of "herd immunity" - the other day on Twitter he was claiming that if you are pro-choice you should also be pro-choice when it comes to vaccines because "it's you health after all"

Indeed, it's not just your health. If you don't vaccinate, and you get infected, you can become an existential threat to the people around you and you don't even know it.

Unfortunately, many people argue that way...
Wondering if organ donation would be a better comparison.
Many find the thought of donating after death unseemly, but I bet they wouldn't say no to a new heart if they needed one.

Maybe airlines should require vaccination record for flights. Schools requiring it for attendance etc. Sure you can have "my body my choice" - just don't expect to avail of services that would involve you being in close proximity to a large group of people. Those people surely should have the right to not be exposed to serious contagious diseases.

Logic fail:
If you're vaccinated you have nothing to worry about.
Also the myth of herd immunity, as if the population was ever vaccinated in such way for herd immunity to ever exist. Lastly, vaccinated people actively shed the disease for months after vaccination and so called immunity requires vaccinations with booster shots every 5 years.

That's not logic, that's a falsehood. No doctor will say that a vaccine gives you 100% immunity. We only have "nothing to worry about" when immunity rates are collectively high enough to prevent contagion spreading.
What are you saying exactly? It's not a coherent objection to herd immunity.
Nonsense. Boosters help to improve immunity above a single vaccination; you don't need to keep getting them repeatedly after the second. The only vaccines you need to update over the years are for those with seasonal strains (the flu).

Why should anybody understand the concept of herd immunity when the population was never vaccinated in such a way that it could be considered herd immunity, and none should mindlessly agree with a concept that has the implications of invalidating people's rights.

One person in a developed Nation has this disease and it's NEWS
That tells you how low the odds of getting measles is at this point.
We have combined vaccinations, medical treatment and sanitation to reduce the death rate to the point it is not significant.
The remaining few cases are being used for hyperbole. Just focus on the benefits of vaccination without treating people like cows.
We aren't herd animals we are humans.

Another way of looking at it is that a small but geographically concentrated group of people have stopped vaccinating their kids, and the result is that a previously extinct disease (in developed world) which used to kill millions yearly, has begun killing people again.
This is not "remaining" cases. This is resurgent. It's a dead virus coming back. Allowing it to persist in pockets also gives it the opportunity to mutate and become a much more widespread epidemic. We're much more vulnerable to contagious illnesses than we were 200 years ago today because we are so interconnected, because we travel so much. Airports are a nightmare for these kinds of diseases, and we travel far more today.

There are hundreds of more effective topics if you care about saving lives.
I am not opposed to vaccinations. I am opposed to you turning people against them, by treating them like farm animals.

Disease is literally the number one killer historically and presently. Even in WW1 more people were killed by a strain of influenza than the war. If you care about saving lives, disease should always be your first priority.
If we're going to live as a large connected world community, some sacrifices have to be made to prevent the spread of highly contagious diseases. It's either that or we go back to pre-20th century rates of death. It will be especially true if we come to the end of the age of anti-biotics, as many are predicting.

Not even the vaccination fliers suggest everyone should be vaccinated.
There are many high risk groups like those with simple eczema.
But some are intent on spreading misinformation.
It's not just the anti vaxxors. It's also this type of fear propaganda

Non medical exemptions from being vaccinated are actually being removed or reviewed for removal because they undermine herd immunity, which protects those high risk groups who can't be vaccinated.

We may not be farm animals, if that idea offends you so much. But we do live as herds, huge herds of millions of people in the same geographic areas. We herd through schools and bus stations and airports. We have a world where an airborne disease can spread from New York to Beijing within a day, something that could never have happened 100 years ago. It's a reality we have to acknowledge and take seriously.

See, this is what so many people who don't vaccinate don't understand... The measles isn't like chickenpox, the measles can KILL YOU! Measles, sometimes called Red Measles, can cause a whole host of severe and life-threatening complications for those infected, including an infection of the brain or spinal cord that is often fatal. Measles is also unimaginably contagious, to the point where an infected individual can walk into an elevator, cough, then you come along a couple of hours later and end up getting infected. This is because it's an airborne virus that in some ways acts like smoke would hanging in the air. If you wanna learn more about how contagious the measles is, then I highly recommend watching this SciShow episode of the subject:
For those that are wondering, German Measles, more commonly called Rebella, is a less severe disease that typically isn't that bad for adults or kids, but can be life threatening for unborn children if the pregnant mother contracts them. To my knowledge, these have been eliminated in America. Well, for now anyways...
