A popular Vancouver newspaper is censoring readers of their online news stories about cannabis:

The Georgia Straight is a free local newspaper that has been in print for decades. Until now, their regular cannabis content (news, activism, medical research, etc) was available online to all readers.

But with the sudden recent magnification of censorship all around the internet, they now require 18+ age verification.

I want to know why anyone thinks this is a good idea. Ignorance is already the problem... why make ourselves even more ignorant, by ensuring the youth can't learn about cannabis?

Also, how is the newspaper going to age-verify readers of their physical in-print copies?

OH NO! Children are learning about CANNABIS!!

(Govt-approved message about cannabis in the newspaper in 1959.)

Stop censoring information, it's out of control! We're normalizing censorship - normalizing ignorance!

Censorship is vile because it is the direct enemy of truth and consciousness!

You either believe in free speech, or you're for censorship. This isn't one of those gray area issues.

Wonder if that title will get you more or less clicks hehe. Must be 18+ to read this is just a trick to get young people to do a little bit of math lol

There's a different kind of censoorhip of information to minors with legalisation. I remember info being sparse and often bad (government propaganda), but available if you knew what to search and weren't afraid to do so (censorship through fear). Why is information now being censored from minors like it's the drug iteslf. Education goes hand-in-hand with a harm reduction model.

Excellent point about education and harm reduction.
