dumb news goes international over a mullet?

in news •  2 years ago

Normally I focus entirely on domestic issues either relating to media bias or just strange or quirky news stories in the USA. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon this hair-raising article but this bit of odd news comes from the other hemisphere down under.

If you are old enough you probably remember the truly awful hairstyles from the 80s and 90s. I was alive in both of those decades and lets just say that I am not terribly happy about most of the pictures that my mom and dad have in their scrapbooks where there are actual photos printed on actual photo-paper. Yeah, there was a time when we did that.

One of the hairstyles that gained a certain level of fame over the years but was TOTALLY NORMAL and actually sought after during those times was the mullet. I think that most people that were kids or teens during that time probably had at least a minor mullet at one point or another. I know that I did and not only was it not meant ironically, it was seen as very good looking. Sure it seems silly now but in 20 years we are all going to be laughing about the "good looking" hairstyles of today. My money is on us really going after the beard craze that is all the rage among men right now. Don't think it will be you? Well, it's going to be buddy, that's the just the nature of the passage of time.

Anyway, back to the mullet. This once highly regarded fashion choice is now almost exclusively done in jest and while there are a few people in the world that can pull it off unironically, for the most part, it is an absolutely, and intentionally ridiculous haircut to have.

Slow down buddy! Save some girls for the rest of us!

Recently a student in Queensland, and I only recently became aware of where that actually is in a geographical sense because I am American, was disallowed entry to the university that he attends because of his haircut. Is the student being a jackaloon by having this haircut in the first place? Of course. Did he do it to intentionally create controversy with the Catholic school? Probably. Is he letting up and cutting it off? Hell no.

The haircut is a true evolution of style and I am sure loads of people are going to be sporting this soon. It just makes sense! It takes business in the front and party in the back to a whole new level. Who wouldn't want to look like this?

The student is only identified as Mr. Wilson or at least in the articles that I read. I suppose he could be a minor and that is why only his mother, Petrina, is named in the article.

The student is refusing to change the hairstyle, which could be sorted out in less than a minute, and now it is starting to look like the student, as well as his mother Petrina, are just trying to get attention out of this just like almost anyone else that does something similar. The family maintains that this was just a traditional celebration that the boys in the school do after winning an important sporting event. They mention "football" but I don't know if they are talking about AFL or soccer. It's Australia folks, I've never been there and I don't know much about the culture or verbage.... sorry.

I suppose it doesn't really matter what sport it was but I do identify with the "tradition" and think it could be a lot of fun especially when you are young and these sorts of choices don't have much impact on your future. The school has a dress and appearance code and I guess that is their right as a school, particularly a religious one.

I think that because I am older I am going to side with the school on this one because what the boy is doing stopped being a celebration of sporting celebration probably after the 1st week. Now he and his family are just being stubborn as we enter the 3rd week that he is not allowed on campus until he adheres to the appearance code.

I think that there should be some sort of appearance code at a school and I say this as someone that did a lot better in school when I briefly attended a private school as a child where everyone was wearing the same thing and only certain types of haircuts were allowed. Does this violate certain rights? I mean, I guess so but only by today's really strange standards that keep getting dumber and dumber as time goes by. But if we allow this I think society becomes a sort of shit show where the educational environment just becomes one big TicTock type situation where everyone is trying to one-up one another for views and likes rather than focusing on what they are really supposed to be at universities for.

I congratulate the boy on his daring haircut initially, but after 3 weeks I think it is time to let it go. In America the family would probably already be suing for punitive damages and emotional distress to the tune of millions of dollars so at least it hasn't gone that far yet. Since this is already dumb it wouldn't surprise me if it gets to that point eventually.

Congratulations kid, you made international news over a silly haircut. Now cash in on it with social media and then let it go.
