DARPA tested the neuroimplant - memory amplifier

in news •  7 years ago

American engineers and neuroscientists have shown that a short-term memory can be improved by 35% using a neuroimaging device that records, processes and reproduces the electromagnetic activity of the brain.

The authors of the article published in the Journal of Neural Engineering prove that unreliable carbon memory (that is, the ordinary human memory) can be strengthened by silicon, computer, by implanting a chip into the brain, which helps to remember the forgotten.

The study, funded by the Office of Advanced Research Projects of the US Department of Defense (DARPA), proved the feasibility of implementing a technology, the description of which sounds like science fiction. Neuroimplant recognizes electromagnetic activity of the brain, allocates patterns accompanying the correct extraction of memory memories, and then reproduces these patterns, stimulates individual groups of neurons with weak electrical impulses.

There were few subjects - only 15 people, all with diagnosed epilepsy and associated short-term memory loss; The neuroimplant was injected into their brains during the execution of another operation, to which all had indications. Implants in the hippocampus improved the short-term memory of participants in the experiment by an average of 35%. "We had little doubt that this would work, because we had already conducted successful experiments on animals, but we were surprised at how effective this worked in humans," explains one of the authors of the work, Robert Hampson, in the accompanying video.
