Mahashivratri Vrat is observed according to the rules mentioned in the Shiva Purana. On this day, Shiva devotees stay awake all night and worship Lord Shiva. The following rules are followed during the fast:

Nirjala Vrat: Some devotees observe Nirjala Vrat, in which they do not have to take water and food.

Falahar: Other devotees observe Phalahar, in which they have to take only fruits and vegetables.

Pavan Bhojan: Some devotees take food considered Vedically sacred during the fast such as Rajgiri, Kumhali and fruits.

Mahashivratri Puja is performed in honor of Shiva and Parvati. The following materials and methods are used for the puja:

Puja Samagri

Shivling: Clean the Shivling and decorate it all around.

Flowers: Roses, jasmine and bilvapatra are placed on the Shivling.

Dhoop and Deepak: Incense and lamps are lit to ensure meticulous puja rituals.

Bhog: Milk, curd, jaggery, rice and fruits are offered on the Shivling.

Bhajan and Mantra: Shiva hymns and mantras are chanted.

Puja Vidhi

Bathing: Take a bath before the puja and wear clean clothes.

Bathing of the Shivling: Bathe the Shivling with milk, curd, jaggery, rice and water.

Abhishek: Perform Abhishek of the Shivling and decorate it with flowers.

Puja Archana: Worship Shiva and Parvati and offer them bhog.

Mantra Japa: Chant Shiva mantras, such as "Om Namah Shivaya".

Bhajan: Sing Shiva hymns and worship him.

Prayer: Pray to Shiva and Parvati and tell them your wishes.

Importance of Mahashivratri

The importance of Mahashivratri is mentioned in Shiva Purana. This day is considered to be the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. On this day, Shiva devotees observe fast and worship Lord Shiva and try to get his blessings.
