  1. Several persons were reportedly killed after suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Tse Igbudu Taraka in Benue State.

According to the report, the gunmen invaded the community at the wee hours of Tuesday and started killing anybody in sight.

  1. Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, on Tuesday released a new video, claiming responsibility for a number of attacks in North East Nigeria during the festive season.

The sect leader in the video refuted the claim from the Nigerian government, that the insurgent group has been defeated.

  1. One of the three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Ebonyi State, Chief Sonni Ogbuoji, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ogbuoji, who represents Ebonyi South senatorial district, said he was no longer comfortable with the leadership style of the former ruling party.

  1. President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that his administration would recover every money looted from the public treasury.

He also promised to bring perpetrators of mayhem across the country to book.

  1. Approximately 20,210 babies were born in Nigeria, on January 1, 2018, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF also said nearly 386,000 babies were born worldwide, same New Year day.

  1. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday expressed shock and outrage at reports of killings of innocent persons in Omoku, Rivers State; and the murder of a traditional ruler, the Etum Numana, Dr. Gambo Makama, and his wife in Sango Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the New Year.

The president subsequently directed law enforcement agencies in both states to intensify their current efforts in order to speedily bring the perpetrators to face the wrath of the law.

  1. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said on Tuesday that it will shock the All Progressives Congress, APC, by winning the governorship election in Lagos in 2019.

PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Taofeek Gani, said the party had mapped out strategies to unseat the ruling party, adding “with the new spirit in PDP in Lagos, we are sure of winning in 2019’’.

  1. A former governor of Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita has passed away.

He died after a protracted illness at Nizamieye Turkish Hospital in Abuja after been on life support in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

  1. The Niger Delta agitators, yesterday, picked holes in President Muhammadu Buhari’s New Year speech, saying he did not show signs of seriousness, action plan and responsibility to really implement the agreement reached with the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, and even the 25-point palliatives of the Federal Government.

The group warned that the days of rhetorics and empty promises were over in the Niger Delta because they were aware of the plan and reason behind the one billion dollars excess crude withdrawal.

  1. On the foreign scene, the Israel government has issued a 90-day notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.

According to the report, the migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days as they will be given the option of going to their home country or third countries.
