Let's Talk About School Shootings From A Different Angle

in news •  7 years ago

United States (Greed) - School shootings have been the central focus, in one way or another, of every news outlet since the most recent shooting in Parkland Florida, rightfully so I would say.

The violence of them, the legislation that may or may not impact them and what could have been done. Greed has tried to hit on some of the topics that may not be getting the coverage they deserve from other media outlets.

We took a look at how that media coverage may be having a negative impact overall. The focus is put on the shooter every single time. This has been debated since Columbine, yet nothing seems to improve. We see a person who committed a horrifying act plastered across our screens, versus the heroes, the victims, the stories we should be learning from.

The outcry over mental illness, We hear it every single time after a tragedy like this. Then it fades off into the sunset as soon as the coverage goes away. Further stigmatizing, and in fact vilifying those that suffer from mental illness every day of their lives, yet somehow manage to never shoot up a building full of people. Where is the continued push to do anything to increase access to healthcare? Maybe next time?

What are the long-term effects on students after the media fades into the shadows? Does enrollment drop in our schools? How does it impact the health and well being of the survivors? What comes next for our students? They don't get to just forget about it.

The money? Always a focus. The NRA is a big one every time. Who are they, and what is their goal? Are they what they used to be when they were first founded? One could imagine the founders may not even recognize what they have become.

The survivors? How are they being treated? Does the way they are being treated show us what, may actually be the problem? If as humans we can so viciously attack the victim of a violent crime how do we as a species manage to live together at all?

There is no simple answer, no quick fix. I think most of us can agree on that. Looking at the broader picture and addressing some of these things could maybe be a start though? Let's keep looking at the angels, try being a bit more concerned with the human side, versus getting the clicks and the views.

Great post - thank you! It's important to look at aspects of a shooting that aren't being talked about, like you said. As an interesting aside, I heard that the Daily Wire has committed to no longer publishing shooters' names. I wonder if other more mainstream publications will follow?

I would be thrilled if that change gets some traction, to see the face and name everywhere, yet no one can name half the victims. It just seems we idolize the killers in our society
