Absolute Disaster at Rio's Olympic Village - gas leaks, cloged drains, electrical problems

in news •  8 years ago  (edited)

The Rio Olympics are just a few days away and athletes are already outraged at the pitiful state of accommodations at the Rio 2016 Olympic Village.

On Sunday, the Australian team had to deal with electricity and plumbing problems. While those issues were taken care of, other international teams have also complained about “uninhabitable” apartments at the Rio athletes village. As the Washington Post reports, the Argentine delegation was forced to rent apartments at a nearby hotel due to problems on two whole floors.

On a more humorous note, the Belorussian Olympic committee uploaded photos of blocked drains on the net.

The communications director for Rio 2016, Mario Andrada, told The Washington Post that several hundred repairmen have been tasked with fixing various issues at the village. The condominiums built to house the athletes will be sold off once Rio 2016 concludes and the consortium of construction firms that built the complex were under very tight deadlines, which in all likelihood contributed to present dilemma.

Australian delegation chief Kitty Chiller said that her group found all kinds of problems in the apartments: faulty electrical systems, overflowing toilets and gas odors.

Some teams like the Dutch even came with their own technicians, having learned some important lessons during previous Olympic events in London and Sochi, where similar issues occurred. However, Dutch delegation spokesperson John van Vliet stated that the issues in Rio are the worst they had ever seen.

Can't say I'm much surprised - Rio's been falling apart for decades, the Olympic village is the least of their woes. It remains to be seen if they can pull this off.

The real big news will start when athletes start to get sick.

undoubtedly, or get's shot or robbed during the games. There's a lot of very unhappy people in Rio, who see the games as being a real kick in the teeth, I've been to Rio twice, and outside of the posh areas like Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, the city is falling to pieces. The economy is in freefall, and people's standard of living in general, is very poor indeed, Rio is a veneer of civility, behind which lies terrible poverty. There's going to be a lot of problems in the streets during the Olympics, and I don't blame the people who live there one bit, it is one of the most inequitable societies I've ever seen.
