Change social networks from Procrastination-Central into a valuable source of information.
How Steemit and Twitter can be beneficial if you've got a winning strategy
It’s been more than 2 years since I’ve watched TV- ok maybe I’ve had a few Netflix sessions here and there, but I’ve completely unplugged from the daily garbage being spewed by the national news stations in the US.
Instead of mindlessly turning on the boob tube and letting the mainstream media enter your brain, I want you to consider taking a different approach to learning about what’s happening in the world.
Don't follow the masses to the slaughter- wake up and take responsibility for what you're being exposed to and make a change to better educate yourself.
Propaganda is real and we've all been subjected to it. We haven't reached North Korea status yet, but don't be a fool and think that your government gives you totally unbiased information.
The beauty in the internet is that so much information is at your fingertips. Ideally we should all be so excited to learn to the point where we are up all night just filling our brains with new knowledge and spreading that enthusiasm with others.
Yes it's easy to sit back and let someone else determine what you should value and just let them spoon feed you any lies that best suit their agendas.
Great minds think alike!
It was 2 years ago I threw away my television and I found that because I am not so distracted by the "backround noise" that I am so much more in control of my own happiness and I am becoming more and more selective in where I put my attention.

@beanz, glad we're on the same page! I totally agree, so much time is wasted watching tv, and that flicker rate really does the trick for keeping people hooked too. Our time is worth much more than what's offered on tv anyway :)

When I have a question, I look for an answer. I disconnected from the television scene nearly ten years ago. It's a wicked beast. If someone else is watching and I enter the room, if I'm not careful, I begin to enter the trance. I still enjoy some of the entertainment, such as movies and sports, but as soon as a commercial comes on I feel disconnected and often lose interest.
The advertisements bother me the most. It seems many are focused on ignoring the information in the form of news, which is wise in most cases. The advertisements have the most power though. Trust me, it wasn't a collective consciousness effect that led everyone to the stores on black friday in the USA or Boxing Day in Canada. A very powerful stream of brainwash put those people there. It creeps me out sometimes...

You're very right, advertisements are so well designed to get inside your head. Ever since I've watched MadMen I've realized how much science goes behind every little detail of an ad. The fact that the advertising is one of the most profitable industries should be an obvious sign that this is how the 'big money' steers the public. Nothing is innocent anymore, it's all designed to make more consumers and to make us think it was our idea to buy... anything really.

Wow, nice to meet you Heidy Travels! :) .. First off, sorry my comment is longer than your blog. That is just how it worked out..
Now I wish I had talked to you more on the crowded bus after Steemfest. You just never know how awake and interesting or asleep and fragile someone might be.. Guess it is better to chat and find out. Sounds like you know about bit about being an activist so your making me think here!
I recently thought of this: It is kind of like waking up from a nice peaceful sleep and finding oneself in the middle a war zone. Then you start to wish for that nice sleep again but you realize you were always at risk even when sleeping. And by going back to sleep you'll still be at risk. So of course you stay awake.
So, yea I think you're right. It is hard to shut your eyes on the truth. One of the best things we can do now it to plant those seeds of influence in everyone else and be careful to protect our environment, our minds, and our compassion.
My family is cable free too. I don't recall ever being into the Real Fake news and I certainly didn't like the school taught history. They had to put me in a vocational school I would act out so much. Lol. Now, I have a friend teaching high school history so I love to get his opinion (aka: violent back-lash reaction) on some of the things I find. I guess he is still a friend, I got to see him the christmas .. He did not bring that up though.
Now that everything is in question or an investigation, I'm the opposite: I study the alt news bascially every chance I get and study documentaries that bring anything official into question (history I can tolerate!).
Lots of fun. Turns out it is rather easy to hear something that may or may not be true and process it later. I can hear really bad news too and mostly not lose sleep over it (anymore).
Even though the news I know in my mind can be sickening or unthinkable to most people, I'm less fearful than I have ever been. I know a monkey has been lifted off my back. The best part is I'm not wondering so much anymore, I either have an idea of what is going on or I'm in a position to hear what is really going on. I have practiced and can be rational even under hard fired up topics.

Nice to meet you as well @jamesc :) I would've loved to get into a convo about this with you on that bus! It's kinda funny if you're trying to figure out someone's stance on all of this, first you ask a few questions and see how deep they'll go with their answers. I love it when someone I've never met does this with me since I already know where he's going with it, and when they realize I'm not a zombie the convos usually go pretty well haha
You bring up a good point about being able to handle really disturbing information now after being kind of desensitized to it. I know my own experience with these realizations has led me to be pretty pessimistic about the future, but then I found this entire underworld of individuals who see things the way that I do and there's lots of people out there- especially in the crypto field- that are working everyday to bring freedom back to currency (and more of course). It's a breath of fresh air!

I stopped watching mainstream news a while ago! Sometimes, It's easier to make informed decisions by doing one's own research than follow the usual BS propaganda on television! Ofcourse mainstream media cannot be ruled out entirely but the times we live in, it's kinda hard to say if they have the interests of the citizens first over everything else. Also, being calm under any situation is the best we can do really..

Always check multiple sources. Always. That's my main tip to everyone.
And don't trust snake oil salesmen just because they're not the main stream media!

Good point @the-ego-is-you I remember watching the Alex Jones show and at first I thought he seemed pretty extreme, then as the election approached I just lost all respect for him really. He gives us "conspiracy theorists" a bad name by acting completely erratic. I'm sure there's more out there that just want to take advantage of people, just like in every field.
Never stop being critical, never take people for their word, do you're own research to educate yourself.

Thank you!
Exactly. I think it's very important that we don't let some peoples fear of infighting, which is not really something I want to promote, lead us to pretend we don't even see when someone knowingly tries to fool us.
There are many different levels of fearmongering and lies, but as you said, the erratic behaviour (shouting in favour of some very nonlibertarian implementations of capital punishment for "traitors" even...) was what got me 100% turned off from Alex Jones a few years back. Today I'm totally sure he is a "closet" fascist and fully deserves to be called out as such. -And I don't use such words lightly.
Now I'm not sure of where you currently stand politically and that's not the point here (although funny fact, I used to be a communist =) ), but Stefan Molyneux is another clear example of someone who pretends to hold certain political ideals (anarcho-capitalist) .... and then he caters to a different audience and his views all of a sudden change in order to fit that audience. Most lately they are nationalists and since the election run up largely Trump supporters.
Dollar Vigilante on the other hand I do disagree with quite a bit, but him I could have a conversation with and I still listen to and appreciate his podcast Anarchast. I don't buy all of the conspiracy theories he promotes, yet so far I think he's been a very positive influence in the anarchist community. That's why I vote for his witness and would consider making him a proxy even.
On a another note or on the topic of doing good, I really like the content you've been putting out lately. ^^ It's been great to see you actually staying on Steemit even after your innitial "fame run" with travel posts. Your content was great back then as well and I'm very happy to see you not jump ship when the rewards came down.
Big thumbs up and thank you for making this platform steeeem! =)

Ahh yes, Stefan Molyneux... yes I agree with you there, I'm a fan of his older videos, he's changed so much- but to be honest I mostly enjoy watching his videos that address psychology and the relationship problems of anonymous callers ;)
Jeff Berwick is definitely someone with sharp views but I respect him for never waivering and for "practicing what he preaches."
Steemit has had a huge impact on my life, I can't just turn my back on it. But even more so, I think steem will rebound in a few months. I haven't given up up writing about my travels, I'm still learning how to balance it out- I rather miss writing about that actually :)

I like the news sources you have mentioned ZH, CD, CT. Not on Twitter as it seems too noisy to me. I still watch television so I can laugh at the propaganda and know what the general population are being fed.

You are bang on and I am glad you are awake and spreading the truth sister.
It's called programming for a reason.
Very glad you did this. I've done a lot of activism, challenged a lot of politicians and "media" at the same time, - they are all in bed together lying to the public by and large.
Critical thinking needs to make a comeback and people need to stop being in a stupor on their phones all day long too -- many times wasting time with honestly stupid dumbed down content.
Have a great 2017. I am sure you will!
