Saudi Arabia again threatened to make a nuclear bomb. This is done if Iran resumes its nuclear weapons program.
The threat was delivered by Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir to Wolf Blitzer Washington time. Al-Jubeir's statement came after US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw the US from a nuclear deal by 2015.
"We will make it very clear that if we get nuclear capability, we will do everything we can, to do the same," he said.
Riyadh's threat to make nuclear weapons is not just this once. Some of the country's top officials, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have made similar ambitions some time ago.
Asked to clarify whether the Saudi Empire would work to gain its own nuclear capabilities, al-Jubeir said, "That's what we mean."
He also praised President Trump's announcement of US withdrawal from Iran's nuclear deal. "We believe the nuclear deal is flawed," al-Jubeir said. "We believe the deal does not deal with Iran's ballistic missile program or does not deal with Iran's support for terrorism," he said, quoted by Thursday (10/05/2018).
Other US allies, Israel, are also pleased with Trump's decision. However, this Trump step is considered to trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, especially between Riyadh and Tehran.
"As long as Iran is constrained and closely examined, the Saudis can get rid of their nuclear ambitions," said Mark Fitzpatrick, executive director of the American branch for the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
"Now their calculations are changing, Trump's rejection of a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear crisis undermines the multilateral diplomacy and the foundations of the nuclear order, proven to be in vain," he said.
During a visit to Washington some time ago, Prince Mohammed bin Salman told CBS that it wanted a uranium enrichment program, a step in the production of nuclear weapons.
"Saudi Arabia does not want to get a nuclear bomb, but without a doubt, if Iran develops a nuclear bomb, we will soon follow it," he said.
