Can't say I'm much surprised - Rio's been falling apart for decades, the Olympic village is the least of their woes. It remains to be seen if they can pull this off.

The real big news will start when athletes start to get sick.

There's a lot of very unhappy people in Rio, who see the games as being a real kick in the teeth, I've been to Rio twice, and outside of the posh areas like Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, the city is falling to pieces. The economy is in freefall, and people's standard of living in general, is very poor indeed, Rio is a veneer of civility, behind which lies terrible poverty. There's going to be a lot of problems in the streets during the Olympics, and I don't blame the people who live there one bit, it is one of the most inequitable societies I've ever seen.
