Human-Pig Hybrids Created in Lab - As Predicted in Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space

in news •  7 years ago  (edited)

Human-Pig Hybrids Created in Lab is what the headlines read. The truth is that important incremental progress has been made in efforts to one day grow human organs in pigs in order to address chronic shortages of organs for people in need of transplants.

When I read this story, it immediately sounded familiar. In Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series, hyperpigs are a race/species of human/pig hybrids that talk, interact, and live with humans. In the books, their backstory is exactly the same as the hybrids in this real science news:
"Pigs (or hyperpigs) within the Revelation Space universe have been genetically modified at various stages throughout Human history. Although modifications were originally related to the growth of human-compatible organs, many races of Pig have heavily altered physiological and neurological states compared to their base ancestors- most notably the ability to think in human terms, and to speak human languages."

*Also, Margaret Atwood's "pigoons" from Oryx and Crake (thanks @kimor!).
