Governor Says Drug Dealers With Names Like “D-Money” Impregnate “White Girls”

Governor Paul LePage of Maine was forced to apologize this week after he made racist comments while fear mongering about drugs. While speaking about the state’s growing heroin epidemic, LePage said that drug dealers were “guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty,” and that “half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave.”

His comments drew criticism immediately, from many people who felt that it was outrageous and racist.

“This is one of the most blatantly racist statements he’s ever made,” said activist Lance Dutson.

Defending himself in a later interview, LePage gave a half-hearted apology and said that “I made a mistake and I’m not perfect, but I will not stop correcting myself and bringing the issue at hand: drugs, drugs, and more drugs. We have people dying. We have families being destroyed.”

“I was going impromptu and my brain didn’t catch up to my mouth,” Governor LePage said on Friday. “Instead of Maine women, I said white women … If you go to Maine, you can see it’s 95% white”, he added.

His spokesman, Peter Steele, later claimed that the governor’s comments had nothing to do with race.

“Race is irrelevant. What is relevant is the cost to state taxpayers for welfare and the emotional costs for these kids who are born as a result of involvement with drug traffickers,” Steele said.

Governor LePage is known for making ridiculous and offensive remarks. Not long ago he was in the news for telling representatives from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to “kiss my butt”.

At a recent press conference, LePage told the reporters, “Get your heads out of the sand, please. I probably couldn’t get so many of you here without saying something foolish.”
