Kids Illustrating Dismal Effects of Being Raised on Social Media as They Snort Condoms for Likes

in news •  7 years ago

If the trend of kids eating Tide Pods  was not disturbing enough, a new social media challenge has teens  snorting condoms. The exact origin of this trend is unknown, but in  recent weeks teens across the country have been snorting condoms and  putting the footage on YouTube to catch their 15 minutes of fame—or  perhaps 15 minutes of shame.

The search term “Condom Challenge” will bring up more than 279,000 results on YouTube, most of which show young people performing this gross and dangerous trick. In the stunt, a teen takes a condom up one nostril and attempt to  pull it out of their mouth or out of the other nostril.

This is actually  a trick that has been performed by professionals in sideshows for  generations. However, none of these kids are professionals and many of  them are getting sick and risking permanent damage to their bodies.

In a recent column for Forbes, Bruce Y. Lee, a Johns Hopkins professor said, “anything  else that goes up your nose can damage the sensitive inner lining of  your nose, cause an allergic reaction, or result in an infection.” Doctor Carol Cooper told The Sun that this stunt could even kill someone.

“The nose is connected to the back of the mouth—it’s also  connected to the airwaves. There’s every possibility something you push  up your nose will end up in your windpipe, or in your lungs. With  potentially fatal results,” Cooper explained.

Why are so many kids doing something so pointless and  dangerous? Experts say that it is tied to seeking attention and approval  on social media.

“Because these days our teens are doing everything for likes, views, and  subscribers. As graphic as it is, we have to show parents because teens  are going online looking for challenges and recreating them,” Stephen Enriquez, a state education specialist, told KPMH News.

These dangerous online trends are an indication that there is  something very wrong with the psychology of young people in modern  society. It is obvious to anyone, even children much younger than these  teens, that eating Tide Pods and snorting condoms is dangerous—but they  don’t seem to care. It is almost as if these people have a death wish, or that they have  no concern for their lives or health.

However, it seems to be much more  complicated than that. It is not that these kids actually want to die,  it simply appears that they value the attention they get on social media  far more than they value their health and their futures. Zooming out a bit and looking at the bigger picture, it is easy to  see this same mentality come into play in the case of teenagers who act  out in more extreme ways.

The darkest example of this mindset can be  seen in the school shooting phenomenon, where perpetrators of these acts  of violence actually look forward to the media attention that they  receive in the aftermath of their attacks — even if they’re not alive to  see it. Last week, it was reported that the suspected gunman in the Parkland  shooting, who shall remain nameless, has been receiving a disturbing  amount of fan mail  from behind bars—including sexual photos from female fans.

For someone  who spends their entire life ridiculed and ignored, as many teens do,  this type of attention can be something very attractive for a young and  impressionable person who has not yet learned how to manage their own  emotions. This is why it is no surprise that there are typically dozens of  attempted copycats, or threats thereof, after a high profile school  shooting.

Confused and disturbed teens end up seeking the attention that  they see others receive through traditional and social media. Although these twisted social media challenges are far less of a  concern than school shootings, both seem to be a sign of how teens are  developing psychologically in an age where self-worth is measured by  likes, clicks and digital friends.

That is incredibly ridiculous. There's way too much fluoride in the water.

Yeah people and kids do all kinds of weird things for attantion...

This is a really harmful trend with kids doing such stuff. We should be really worried about our education system and media.

I would rather get a job writing lines for David Hogg then snort a condom.

Yup, thats the nail in the coffin on the "kids with channels" debate for me. My kids are getting a t-ball set, a soccor net,,,,, anything but a pack of condoms and a camera!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, the 'ol "condom up the nose" trick. Back in my day, we would do this with them full of thurmite and ignite them via magnesium ribbon once they reached the back of the nasal cavity...

Obviously sarcasm. But seriously, what the hell is going on with these kids today? Where are the parents? What is wrong with the parents?!
Social media has become a disgusting blight that needs to be eradicated. Quite literally for the sake of humanity...

I'm actually kind of thinking about taking the "I'm moving to mars" challenge now.

Do you get extra points if they're soiled lol?

A great post. centralized social media is turning kids into sheep. Following the weeks ridiculous "trend".

I think the sadder commentary is that people will actually watch it. It is just stupid. Now if you had the "I am going to suck milk up my nose and blow it out of my eye" challenge, that is some thing I would watch.

oh dear word. this is just simply disturbing on so many levels.

This is unbelievable how stupid people can be to do this 💩

😂😂😂😂😂😂👍

I wouldn't be too worried. Every generation has to find their way to do things the grown ups dont understand and worry about. We did it, our parents did it and the kids today do it. Of course this is stupid and pointless, but it will pass and soon these kids will worry what the generation after them is doing.

I've seen so many videos of this "challenge", but I think it's stupid to even try it. I even read a couple of stories of teenagers who lost it somewhere in between their nose and mouth.. And I'm sure it's a weird situation to explain your parents why you have to go to the hospital now!

it was so much better when all you had to snort to be cool was cocaine.

"Confused and disturbed teens end up seeking the attention that they see others receive through traditional and social media."

yup, its getting bad...

Sadly, it makes sense that kids are snorting condoms and shooting their classmates for the same reasons. Shock value and attention seeking go hand in hand.

My initial thought was "no way, this can't be real." But you outline it very well.

My question is this:
How can we stop them and make their lives better to where they don't see a need to snort condoms and shoot each other?

Add that to the list of things I never thought I'd ask.

They don't have better things to do anymore and resort to this stupidity...you are right, 15 minutes of shame...boooo

In my opinion we have to consider the deep mind control and programming that has been going on, society is being unfortunately moulded by very able and cunning experts on the workings of human psyche. These "trends", as for instance the "ice bucket challange" and other stuff are simply part of a mass manipulation program.

That goes also for school shootings, are they happening "just" because somebody has been ridiculed by his peers and then they're used to justify more gun control...or are they happening directly because of this agenda? I personally go with the latter.

Disgusting

I guess I'm getting old but I don't understand why putting the word challenge after something really stupid will cause a ton of people to go out and do that stupid thing.

Someone should start the sterilize yourself challenge and maybe we can raise the average intelligence of our society.

So sad, it's time for kids to go outside again and unplug for a bit

Imagine the next headline:

Capitol: GOVERNMENT CURBS STUPIDITY!

In an effort to curb mass stupidity, the government has instituted a minimum age to purchase condoms. Seeing how this would positively affect future voter turnout, they immediately raised the legal limit from age 18 to 32.
