Scientists Using Blockchain to Stop Monsanto from Taking Over Cannabis Industry

in news •  6 years ago

Blockchain startups have been offering interesting solutions for the  cannabis industry, which is facing strict regulations from the  government, as well as constant take-over attempts by large  corporations. One major concern of cannabis advocates is the possibility of large  biotech corporations like Monsanto patenting seeds or even DNA for  different strains.

A creative solution to this problem is a sort of  cannabis genome project, in which researchers use technology that  gathers the genetic information of the plant. Medical Genomics, the  group behind the project, is publishing all of their results at  Kannapedia.com using their StrainSEEK Identification and Registration  service.

Medicinal Genomics is a 15-person start-up best known for  first sequencing the cannabis genome and open sourcing its genome as a  scientific charity to the world.

According to their website

Kannapedia will provide the identity, heritage, and  chemistry of the cannabis and hemp plants that have been tested using  the StrainSEEK service. For the first time, growers, consumers,  patients, and clinicians will be able to identify the exact strain and  key characteristics of the cannabis and hemp they are purchasing,  enabling confidence in the quality and reliability of the product.

In addition to protecting strains of cannabis from corporate patent  trolls, this registry will provide vital information to customers so  they can finally know exactly what they are getting.

Despite the fact  that most dispensaries attempt to provide information about their  products, that information isn’t always reliable and it isn’t easy for a  customer to actually verify the quality of their purchase. Kevin McKernan, Cheif Scientific Officer of Medical Genomics, said in a recent proposal that he wants to integrate his research with blockchain technology.

“Some jurisdictions are discussing mandating DNA fingerprinting  of mother plants to enhance the seed to sale tracking system while IBM  is publishing whitepapers encouraging the cannabis industry to adopt  blockchains. We have also published our own whitepaper on the importance  of genomic information in any Cannabis Blockchain and the enhanced  utility delivered with DNA fingerprints. A barcoding system based on  genetics offers maximal scientific utility to the grower and user  community compared to the present RFID tag via arbitrary number  barcoding systems,” McKernan said.

In the video below, from the Texas Bitcoin Conference last year, McKernan explains his research:

I don't smoke, and am not in favor of people using it for recreational purposes, but this is just another case of Monsatan thinking (and acting) like they rule the world.

BURN IN HELL MONSATAN!!!!

Why would you care what I do recreationally unless it in some was has an impact on your rights, happiness or well being? Doesn't even make sense tome that you'd take a position on that??? To me it's like me not liking raisin bran and yet not being in favor of you liking raisin brain? I couldn't care less if you like or dislike raisin bran.: ) Live and let live. Oh and we agree about Monsanto- only reason I bothered replying- love ya

I couldn't agree more

This is a really cool project man! Thanks for sharing.

Even in my home of Alabama we are concerned about the source of our cannabis, and since it's 100 % illegal we put enormous trust in others not to send us chemically garbage with corrupt genetics.

But at the end of the day we have no way of knowing for sure what we are putting in our bodies..... Until now apparently.

Really cool man, thanks for sharing 😊😊

ANYTHING to crush those evil Luciferian bastards who demonize the plant they fear which nurtures healing and awakening-this is why they outlaw it- it's a GD plant- makes no sense for them to wage war against it unless of course they FEAR IT.

I had not thought about this potential use of blockchain technology before, so it can not only protect people from abusing government but also from abusing corporations.

This is a great example of how the blockchain tech can be used for good :)

The race is on!

as long as cannabis is illegal on the federal level they cannot patent it. No one can. What if Monsanto did patent some cannabis or create GMO cannabis, what would the results be?

A barcoding system based on genetics offers maximal scientific utility to the grower and user community compared to the present RFID tag via arbitrary number barcoding systems,” McKernan said.

Of course both are stupid and only exist because states like Colorado have totally insane laws requiring every plant to be tracked and traced, the best solution to this problem would be to end those absurd requirements. They are treating cannabis like it is nuclear material except with more paperwork and security.

Maybe they should come over to Canada and patent it here until US wakes up to the program.

If 10% of Canadians smoke an average of one eight a week the gross revenue from cannabis in Canada is less than 8 billion a year. For whatever portion of that market they could capture it wouldn't be worth it, probably not every Canadian pot smoker would choose Monsanto's patented GMO pot would they? Unless it is really incredible and if its that good and everyone likes it then what's the harm?

I'm all for anything that slows down Monsanto and their evil crusade to take over the world.

They're imposing similar horrible regulations and legislation here in Canada. They're trying to prohibit the purchase of non-government weed and growing non-government plants. Licensed producers will be mandated to irradiate their cannabis and spray it with toxins, even the "organic" options. When (private) lab tested, this cannabis is significantly lower potency of THC/CBD.
